An explosion proof mobile phone for Braskem in Brazil has to work across more than one kind of hazardous area on the same site. Braskem is the largest petrochemical producer in the Americas, and its two biggest Brazilian complexes, Camaçari in Bahia and Triunfo in Rio Grande do Sul, put flammable gas units and combustible polymer powder within a few hundred metres of each other. Camaçari began commercial operation in 1977 and Triunfo in 1982, and both are built the way integrated petrochemical poles are built: a cracker at the centre, then units that turn its ethylene and propylene into polyethylene, polypropylene and other products. The walk from one end of a unit to the other crosses several classifications. Furnaces and fractionation carry gas, usually with hydrogen in the mix. Downstream, the polymer arrives as powder or pellets and the hazard changes to dust. Braskem also has plants elsewhere in Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo state, and abroad, so site conditions are not uniform.
Camaçari and Triunfo are far apart and neither is gentle. The IS-04Z1 is designed to be one handset for both, so the choices below are the ones a fleet manager is likely to raise.
Camaçari is tropical and humid. Triunfo has a more temperate climate, with colder winters than most Brazilian industrial sites. IP68 sealing and the rugged build are meant to cover both ends without a second model for each site.
A rounds route can pass a cracker furnace and a polymer silo. The design target covers Zone 1 and Zone 21, so the operator is not asked to leave one phone at a boundary and collect another to carry on.
Powder handling is a known ignition concern, and what a worker may carry into a bagging hall is set by the area classification and the site's own electrostatic rules. Expect the HSE team to ask for the marking and the conditions of safe use in writing.
