ATEX and IECEx Smartphone in Senoko Industrial Zone

Senoko is an industrial subzone of Sembawang on Singapore's northern coast, best known for Senoko Power Station. Classified areas centre on the power station's gas systems and on fuel storage tank leasing and terminal services, not on the whole estate. If you are specifying an ATEX and IECEx smartphone for Senoko, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.

More about Senoko that matters for portable equipment

Senoko: industry on the ground

Senoko Power Station is the largest power station in Singapore and was commissioned in 1976, after planning began in the early 1970s under the Public Utilities Board.

Senoko: infrastructure

Its authorised capacity is 2,800 megawatts from seven operating units, and it runs mainly as a combined-cycle gas plant, so gas-turbine halls and fuel systems form its main classified areas.

Senoko: industry on the ground

Natural gas supplies over 90 percent of Singapore's electricity, up from less than 20 percent in 2000, which is why large gas-fired plants such as Senoko dominate the local hazardous-area picture.

Senoko: infrastructure

Combined-cycle units 6 and 7, rated at 431 megawatts each, were completed by 2012 by repowering the second oil-fired steam stage, while units 3 to 5 at 365 megawatts each followed by 2004.

The term · ATEX and IECEx

What “ATEX and IECEx” means for a smartphone

ATEX is the European legal framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (Directive 2014/34/EU). IECEx is the international certification scheme built on the IEC 60079 standards. Buyers outside Europe often ask for both: an IECEx certificate is the technical evidence most national regimes build on, while ATEX is the legal route into the European market.

For the IS-04Z1 both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and neither certificate has been issued. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4: equipment Group II (surface industry), Category 2 (Zone 1 gas), protection concept ib (intrinsic safety), gas group IIC and temperature class T4.

In Senoko. Reviewers at a power station such as Senoko would expect ATEX and IECEx documents side by side, since gas turbine and fuel-system work draws on equipment suppliers and engineers from several countries. The IS-04Z1 certification is in progress, so only a datasheet is available now. The plant owner decides which certificates and which conformity schedule it will accept.

Questions · Senoko Industrial Zone

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Senoko Industrial Zone today?

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.

What does an ATEX and IECEx smartphone in Senoko Industrial Zone cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Is the IS-04Z1 ATEX and IECEx certified?

Not yet. Both routes are in progress with TÜV in Germany and no certificate has been issued. Any listing that says otherwise is wrong.

Which areas at Senoko would use it?

Likely candidates are power plant gas and fuel systems, fuel storage tanks and terminal services. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

When are outages most likely to need extra field devices?

Combined-cycle units are taken offline for planned inspections, and contractor numbers rise during those windows. Dates are set by the operator and the grid, so ask the plant's maintenance planner about the outage calendar and the approved-equipment list.

Does the fuel mix change the equipment requirement?

Natural gas has been the main fuel since 1992, with fuel oil as a back-up. Gas groups and temperature classes differ between natural gas and oil vapour, so devices should be matched to the gas group and temperature class stated in the plant's area classification.

Is the whole Senoko estate a hazardous area?

No. The classified areas are mostly the gas and fuel systems and fuel tanks at the power station, not the estate as a whole. Other tenants have not been checked here. Ask the relevant operator for its classification before assuming a zone, and confirm with the site operator.
