Explosion proof mobile phone for Refining and Petrochemicals in Turkiye

Turkish refining and petrochemical capacity sits in a few clusters: Aliağa on the Aegean, İzmit and Körfez on the Marmara, and single plants at Kırıkkale and Batman. This page is for the HSE managers and engineers who need an explosion proof mobile phone for refining and petrochemicals in Türkiye that works across clusters and operators. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still being certified. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

An explosion proof mobile phone across the refining clusters

Aliağa is the densest cluster. Tüpraş’s İzmir refinery, SOCAR Türkiye’s STAR refinery and the Petkim petrochemical complex sit within the same coastal strip, which means contractors, shared utilities and shared jetties. On the Marmara, Tüpraş’s İzmit refinery at Körfez has an 11 million tonne capacity and a residue upgrading complex, and Petkim’s original plant is at Yarımca in Kocaeli. Dilovası, also in Kocaeli, houses the chemistry-specialised industrial zone known as GEBKİM. Inland, Kırıkkale takes crude through a 457 km pipeline from Ceyhan and Batman runs local crude. Each cluster has its own labour market and its own rhythm of stops.

Clusters and operators

Aliağa
İzmir refinery, STAR refinery, Petkim and the Aliağa terminal on one coast.
İzmit and Körfez
İzmit refinery with its residue upgrading units, and Petkim’s Yarımca plant.
Dilovası, Kocaeli
GEBKİM, described as Türkiye’s only chemistry-specialised organised industrial zone.
Kırıkkale
Inland refinery of 5 million tonnes, fed from Ceyhan by pipeline.
Batman
Small refinery of 1.1 million tonnes on domestic crude.
Marine terminals
Crude and product jetties at Aliağa and in the Gulf of İzmit.
Regulation
Major hazard sites also come under the Seveso-based regulation on major industrial accidents.

Classified areas and work

Process units
Distillation, conversion and treating areas with hydrogen in the gas mix.
Cracker and polymer plants
Ethylene, propylene and polymer powder in adjoining areas.
Tank farms
Crude, product and feedstock storage with continuous gauging.
Loading and jetties
Marine, road and rail dispatch with high daily volumes.
Flare and utilities
Flare headers, steam and power plants with their own hazards.
Shared pipe racks

What these clusters do to a handset

The clusters differ, but the working pattern has common features. These four are the ones to test a handset against.

Stops that draw on the same labour pool

Planned shutdowns at neighbouring plants compete for the same contractor workforce. A handset managed through each operator’s own console can be issued, restricted and wiped as a crew moves from one gate to the next.

Hydrogen, ethylene and dust together

A refinery brings hydrogen (IIC), a cracker brings ethylene (IIB), and a polymer plant brings powder. The IS-04Z1’s II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 gas target and Zone 21 dust design are meant to cover the sector with one device.

The legal file is in Turkish

Under law 6331, the employer’s explosion protection document is written and kept in Turkish. A Turkish interface and documentation set are meant to make citing the marking string simple.

Coastal and inland conditions

Aliağa and Körfez face salt air and summer heat, Kırıkkale and Batman face dust and inland winters. IP68 sealing and a published temperature range are the evidence a reviewer will ask for.

Use cases · Refining and petrochemicals

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Turnaround01

Permit and isolation control

A supervisor at a refinery stop confirms isolations and blinds with a photograph tied to the permit, rather than at a permit office a long way from the unit.

Operations02

Cross-site rounds at Aliağa

An inspector whose job spans refinery and petrochemical plant carries one handset and one policy across both sides of a boundary.

Dispatch03

Loading and jetty checks

A loading operator checks bay or berth details, photographs a seal and reaches the control room, all from the gantry.

Frequently asked questions

What does Seveso-based regulation change for equipment choice?

Sites that hold large inventories come under a regulation on the prevention of major industrial accidents, which an update aligned with the EU’s Seveso III brought into Turkish legislation in 2019. It adds safety reporting for the site, so the equipment file can be read for more than one purpose.

Why do contractors at different refineries need one policy?

Contractor firms move between sites on a shutdown calendar. A handset the operator can enrol, restrict and wipe means the same device and policy follow the crew.

Which refinery pages cover site-specific detail?

See the pages on Tüpraş, SOCAR Türkiye and Petkim for site facts, and the Türkiye country page for the regulatory route.
