Explosion proof mobile phone for BOTAS in Turkiye

BOTAŞ moves and stores most of the gas Türkiye uses, and its group also runs crude oil lines and the Ceyhan marine terminal. This page is for the HSE specialists, terminal operators and telecoms teams who must decide what an explosion proof mobile phone for BOTAŞ sites in Türkiye has to prove before it is carried past a gate. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still in certification. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone has to work at BOTAŞ

The Marmara Ereğlisi terminal on the Marmara shore has three storage tanks of 85,000 m³ each and can send out 37 million m³ of gas a day, taking roughly 65 LNG cargoes a year. A fourth tank of 160,000 m³ has been reported as under construction from July 2026, which puts a major civil and mechanical contractor workforce next to a live terminal for several years. Floating units add capacity on the İskenderun gulf and the Gulf of Saros, underground storage at Silivri and Tuz Gölü carries the winter peak, and the transmission network ties them together through compressor and metering stations spread across the country. Most of that is outdoors, spread over long distances, and a long way from a safe-area charging point.

Sites and assets

Marmara Ereğlisi
Onshore LNG terminal: three 85,000 m³ tanks and 37 million m³ a day send-out.
Dörtyol
Floating terminal on the İskenderun gulf, in operation since February 2018.
Ertuğrul Gazi
170,000 m³ floating unit that can serve Dörtyol or Saros.
Saros
Floating terminal in the Gulf of Saros, started in 2023.
Silivri
Underground storage near Istanbul, expanded to about 4.6 billion Sm³.
Tuz Gölü
Underground storage near Sultanhanı, Aksaray; phase I complete, expansion continuing.
Compressor stations
Including Kırklareli, Ambarlı, Pendik, Bursa and Eskişehir on the Russian supply line.

Classified areas and work

Tank and send-out areas
Methane is gas group IIA, so a handset marked for IIC covers it.
Jetties and arms
Ship-to-shore transfer, with the vessel’s own rules applying alongside the terminal’s.
Compressor halls
Gas-driven machinery where seals and vents set the zone boundaries.
Metering and pressure reduction
Small, often unmanned stations visited by a crew on a route.
Crude oil lines
Ceyhan–Kırıkkale (457 km, from 1986) and Batman–Dörtyol (515 km, from 1967), with pump stations.
Ceyhan marine terminal
Crude tanks and a long export jetty, fed by the BTC and Iraq–Türkiye lines.
Offices and control rooms
Outside the classified boundary; the handset’s job starts at the fence.

What BOTAŞ work asks of a handset

The area classification decides where a device may go at all. After that, the shape of the network decides how it is used. These are the four conditions that come up when gas transmission work is described.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

A network measured in hundreds of kilometres

A pressure reduction station or valve site is visited by a crew that has driven there, and the nearest colleague may be an hour away. Four-constellation GNSS puts a coordinate on the fault report, and the 4,000 mAh cell is meant to cover a full route without a charging stop inside a classified area.

Cargo transfers that do not wait for a shift change

LNG and crude cargoes arrive when the ship does. IP68 sealing copes with spray on a jetty, and the 50 MP camera records a manifold position or a seal number as evidence, so the handover note matches what was actually seen.

Construction beside live plant

The fourth tank at Marmara Ereğlisi means contractors working next to operating equipment. Android Enterprise enrolment lets BOTAŞ’s own console issue, restrict and reclaim handsets as crews rotate, instead of leaving a phone with a subcontractor.

A file that has to be quotable

A Turkish İSG specialist writes the equipment selection into the patlamadan korunma dokümanı. The marking string, gas group and temperature class need to be citable, and the Turkish interface and documentation set are meant to make that straightforward.

Use cases · BOTAŞ

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

LNG terminal01

Tank, vaporiser and send-out rounds

An operator at Marmara Ereğlisi walks pump, vaporiser and pipework areas through a shift, logs readings and photographs anything that looks wrong. One enrolled handset replaces the radio, the camera and the paper round sheet.

Transmission02

Compressor and metering station inspection

Crews on the Russian-supply line or the Samsun–Ankara line work through station after station. A handset that holds a position fix and sends a photograph from the fence line makes the visit report a record rather than a recollection.

Crude oil03

Pump station and Ceyhan terminal call-outs

The Ceyhan–Kırıkkale and Batman–Dörtyol lines run through remote ground, and the Ceyhan terminal never stops loading. A maintenance crew can receive a work order, navigate to the point and report from the same device.

Questions · BOTAŞ

Frequently asked questions

What does BOTAŞ ask of a new equipment supplier?

BOTAŞ publishes tender notices and documents through its website and its procurement department, and its purchasing regulation provides for supplier qualification to be recorded electronically. Suppliers are usually asked to show manufacturer or authorised-dealer status. Site-level approval for hazardous-area equipment is a separate conversation with the procurement and HSE teams, and this page does not describe it.

Does every BOTAŞ site need a Zone 1 handset?

No. Zones come from the area classification drawing for each site, not from the operator’s name. Well-ventilated outdoor gas equipment is often Zone 2, with Zone 1 around specific releases. A Zone 1 device can also be used in Zone 2, which is why one handset can serve a route that crosses both.

How do floating terminals differ for equipment?

A floating unit is a ship, so the hazardous areas on board are defined under marine rules rather than only the terminal’s onshore drawings. Ask the vessel manager and the terminal HSE team whether a handset must be accepted by both before it goes aboard.
