Explosion proof mobile phone for PETKIM in Turkiye

Petkim is Türkiye’s integrated petrochemical producer, and its Aliağa complex, built from 1985, is next door to a refinery that supplies it with naphtha. This page is for the process safety and HSE teams who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Petkim in Türkiye to carry through olefin, polymer and port areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and is still being certified. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What an explosion proof mobile phone meets at Petkim Aliağa

Petkim was founded in 1965 by Turkish Petroleum and was privatised in 2008. SOCAR is its majority shareholder, and the original plant is at Yarımca in Kocaeli. The Aliağa complex, near İzmir, began to be built from 1985 and carries most of the group’s production. Published descriptions give about 15 main production facilities and roughly 3.6 million tonnes a year of gross capacity, led by ethylene, with polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, vinyl chloride monomer and xylenes among the products. Feed arrives from the neighbouring STAR refinery under a long-term offtake agreement for naphtha and mixed xylene, and the Petlim container port next to the site opened in December 2016. A crew moving between a cracker, a polymer plant and the quay crosses several different hazard types in one shift.

Plants and facilities

Aliağa complex
Built from 1985; the main production site, near İzmir.
Yarımca
The original Petkim plant in Kocaeli.
Olefins
Ethylene is the largest product by capacity; ethylene is gas group IIB.
Polymers
Polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC lines, with silos and bagging.
Vinyl chloride
VCM unit feeding the PVC plant, with its own toxic-gas controls.
Aromatics
Xylenes, including mixed xylene supplied from the STAR refinery.
Petlim port
Container port, first phase of 800,000 TEU opened in December 2016.

Classified areas and work

Cracker and compression
Hydrogen, ethylene and light hydrocarbons at high pressure.
Polymer powder and pellets
Fine polymer dust in reactors, dryers and silos, a Zone 21 matter.
Tank and sphere storage
Propylene, ethylene and solvent storage with loading arms.
Utilities and flare
Steam, power and flare systems that run through the complex.
Rail and road loading
Bulk polymer and liquid dispatch round the clock.
Quay and marine berths
Chemical and naphtha handling alongside the container port.
Offices and labs
Outside the boundary, with sample runs crossing into it.

What a petrochemical complex does to a handset

A petrochemical site gives a handset two jobs at once: gas near the cracker and dust near the polymer plant. The points below are specific to that mix.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Gas and dust in the same footprint

A cracker is a gas job, while a polyolefin silo or a PVC dryer is a dust job. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust under one certification programme, so an operator does not swap devices at a boundary.

Ethylene and hydrogen set the group

Ethylene is group IIB and hydrogen is IIC. The marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is chosen so a single handset is not excluded from either unit.

Crews who cross the site all day

A shift engineer visits the cracker, the polymer lines and the quay. Four-constellation GNSS, a 50 MP camera and a 4,000 mAh battery are specified for a day of that, without returning to a safe-area charger.

Documents that come with a turnaround

Planned stops bring contractor crews who need permits, site maps and procedures. Android Enterprise lets the site push only the applications it approves and recover the device when the crew leaves.

Use cases · Petkim

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Olefins01

Cracker unit rounds

An operator walks a furnace and compression area, reads local gauges and photographs a flange. The reading and the picture go straight to the shift log.

Polymers02

Silo and bagging line checks

A technician in a polymer powder area records a blockage or a leaking seal with a photograph and a position, which saves a second trip to confirm what the control room has been told.

Port03

Quay and loading operations

A loading operator at the berth or a dispatch gantry checks documents and takes a photo of a seal, with IP68 sealing coping with spray in a coastal setting.

Questions · Petkim

Frequently asked questions

Does Petkim publish a supplier or HSE requirement?

Petkim publishes a document on ESG practices in procurement and HSE on its website. It is the right place to start for the company’s expectations. Registration steps for a hazardous-area equipment supplier are agreed directly with the procurement and HSE teams, and this page does not claim any SAMS registration.

Can one handset be used at the refinery next door?

The certificate and marking belong to the device, but each site classifies its own areas. The Petkim and STAR HSE teams define zones separately, and each would check the marking against its own drawings. See the SOCAR Türkiye page for the refinery side.

Why mention gas groups on a petrochemical page?

Different gases ignite at different energies. Ethylene is IIB and hydrogen is IIC, which is why a handset marked only for a lower group may be refused at some units. The IS-04Z1’s marking target covers IIC; the certificate will confirm it.
