Explosion proof mobile phone for Vopak in Singapore

Vopak runs bulk liquid storage in Singapore across terminals including Sebarok, Banyan and Penjuru, so its people work on islands, on Jurong Island and on the mainland wharves. This page is for the terminal operators, jetty supervisors, HSE officers and IT teams who must decide what explosion proof mobile phone in Singapore can be carried around tanks, pump bays and berths. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

An explosion proof mobile phone for Vopak’s Singapore terminals

A storage terminal is a different working day from a refinery. There are few process units, the hazard is flammable liquid and vapour in motion between tank, pump, line and ship, and most of the work is in the open. Sebarok is an island terminal to the south of the main island, mainly oil storage and reached by boat. Banyan sits on Jurong Island with oil and chemicals tanks close to the island’s producers and the underground rock caverns. Penjuru is on the mainland at Jurong, with chemicals storage and a shorter trip from the road. That spread matters because each location has its own permits and arrangements. In tank storage the common classification is Zone 1 around vents, pump seals and sampling points, with Zone 2 across the bund and the jetty approach; ignition sources include the person at the tank. The gas group depends on product: gasoline and naphtha are mostly IIA, many solvents IIB, and hydrogen-bearing streams do not normally sit in this kind of tankage.

Terminals and berths

Sebarok
Island terminal south of the main island, mostly oil storage.
Banyan
Jurong Island terminal with oil and chemicals tankage.
Penjuru
Mainland Jurong terminal with chemicals storage.
Jetties and pipelines
Ship transfer and the pipe corridors that link tanks to berths.
Neighbouring producers
Refineries and chemical plants whose products arrive by pipeline and go out by ship.
Surveyors and inspectors
Independent cargo and tank inspectors who spend their day on the tank top.

Classified areas in tank storage

Floating roof tank rims
Vapour at the seal and the vent, a Zone 1 problem for anyone on the roof.
Pump bays and manifolds
Seals and flanges that leak small quantities by design or by wear.
Sample points
Where a person opens a line deliberately, so the vapour is predictable but present.
Jetty loading arms
Transfer in the open, with ship and shore both classified.
Vapour recovery and blending
Equipment that exists because vapour is a cost and a hazard.
Bunds and drainage
Zone 2 around tanks, including the low points where liquid collects.
Built for local conditions

What terminal work does to a handset

A terminal job is mostly standing next to something and writing down what it is doing. The handset has to be the thing that records it.

Gauging and sampling with a timestamp

Product quantity is a commercial figure as well as a safety one. A reading recorded on the tank, with the position and time attached, settles a later disagreement faster than a figure written on a pad.

Tank tops and tank roofs in the open

A person on a tank roof is in the weather and often in the vapour. IP68 sealing and rugged build help with rain and knocks, and the certificate fixes the temperature class that matters for flammable liquids.

Island logistics at Sebarok

A trip back for a forgotten device is a boat. The IS-04Z1 is designed so that the call, the camera, the position and the permit lookup are all in one pocket, with a 4,000 mAh battery for the shift.

Ship and shore on one device

Jetty work puts a terminal operator, a ship’s officer and a surveyor on the same berth. A managed Android handset can carry the terminal’s own checklist, and the camera can be limited by policy where site rules restrict photography.

Approval is for Vopak to define

We cannot tell you what Vopak requires of a handset supplier and do not claim any listing. Ask the terminal’s procurement, IT and HSE teams what they need, and we will answer in writing against it.

Use cases · Vopak Singapore

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work in Vopak’s terminals

Operations01

Tank rounds and line-up checks

An operator walking a tank row records level, temperature and any seal weep, photographs the problem and flags it to the control room. The photograph has a position, so the maintenance planner knows which tank.

Marine02

Ship loading and discharge at the berth

During a transfer, the jetty supervisor needs to talk to the control room, check the line-up and photograph a hose or arm. One device replaces separate radio, camera and notebook.

Inspection03

Tank inspection and surveyor access

An independent surveyor on a short visit can be issued a managed handset enrolled for the day and restricted to the approved applications, then collected at the gate.

Questions · Vopak Singapore

Frequently asked questions

Which gas group do tank terminals normally need?

It follows the products stored. Gasoline and naphtha are mostly IIA, many solvents IIB. Because one terminal may hold several products, a device marked IIC covers the lot, which is why the IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

Will Vopak accept the IS-04Z1 in Banyan or Sebarok?

That is Vopak’s decision and follows the certificate rather than coming before it. There is no agreement between SAMS and Vopak, and no certificate yet exists for the device.

Does the device cover dust as well as vapour?

The design target is Zone 21 as well as Zone 1. Liquid storage terminals are mostly a vapour question, so the dust rating matters more for the plants whose products arrive here than for the tank farm itself.

Can a surveyor use their own Ex phone instead?

Whether a visitor’s device is allowed is a site rule. A terminal fleet gives the operator control over applications and camera settings, which a visitor’s personal device does not.
