Explosion proof mobile phone for Marine & Bunkering in Singapore

Singapore is the world’s largest bunkering port, and the work behind that is gauging, sampling and metering on bunker tankers, at jetties and at the anchorages. This page is for the barge masters, surveyors, terminal operators and HSE teams who must decide what explosion proof mobile phone in Singapore may be carried on deck. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

An explosion proof mobile phone for marine and bunkering work in Singapore

Bunkering means delivering marine fuel to a ship, and in Singapore most of it is done by licensed tankers alongside the receiving vessel at the anchorages, with some at the wharves. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore licenses bunker suppliers and requires bunker deliveries of marine fuel oil to be measured by mass flow meter, so a surveyor, a barge crew and the receiving ship’s officers all stand around the same measurement. Residual fuel has a high flashpoint and is not the main ignition problem. The hazard comes from what else is on or near the tanker: light cargo and slops, vapour in cargo tanks, marine gas oil mixing, LNG and other alternative fuels as they come into the port, and the offshore and marine yards at Tuas that reach the same waters. The deck of a bunker tanker is a classified area in practice, and a phone carried onto it is a possible ignition source.

Where the work happens

Anchorages
Bunker tankers come alongside waiting ships, mainly in open water.
Jurong Port and the western wharves
Bulk cargo, cement and bunker barge operations on the mainland.
Tuas Port
The new port area west of the island, with marine yards beyond.
Island storage
Sebarok and Busing supply fuel to the bunker market.
Offshore and marine yards
Rig and hull work; see the explosion proof phone for Seatrium page.
Surveyors and samplers
Independent staff who go aboard to measure and take samples.

Hazards on and around a bunker tanker

Cargo tanks and ullage spaces
Vapour is present whenever a hatch or vent is opened.
Manifold and hose connection
Spray or drip at a coupling during connection and disconnection.
Sampling
Drip samples and continuous sampling at the manifold, with vapour at the sample point.
Pump room
Enclosed space where leak vapour can collect.
LNG and alternative fuels
Different gas groups and different temperatures from conventional bunkers.
Receiving ship
Its own classified areas around the bunker station and tank vents.
Built for local conditions

What a bunker delivery does to a handset

A bunker delivery is short, wet and watched by several parties. Whatever is recorded on the deck needs to survive an argument later.

A reading that settles a dispute

Quantity and quality are commercial points. A photograph of the meter or sample label, stamped with position and time at the manifold, is stronger evidence than a figure copied later on shore.

Wet decks and salt spray

Open deck means spray, rain and salt air. IP68 sealing and rugged build suit that environment, with the certificate stating the ambient range for the marking.

A launch ride between jobs

A surveyor often goes from one tanker to another by boat, so there is no desk in between. A 4,000 mAh battery covers a full day of jobs, and four-constellation GNSS gives a position on open water.

One handset, several parties

Barge crew, surveyor and terminal operator each use different applications. Android Enterprise enrolment allows a company to restrict the camera or apps by policy and to control a fleet from an existing MDM console.

Licences and vessel rules are separate

The vessel’s class rules, the port authority’s requirements and each supplier’s own procedures decide what may be used on board. Ask the supplier’s HSE team; a handset does not replace the vessel’s radios.

Use cases · Singapore marine and bunkering

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work in Singapore bunkering

Delivery01

Connection, metering and disconnection

A tanker mate photographs the meter readings and the connection at the manifold, calls the receiving ship and records the time, all without putting a device down.

Surveying02

Sampling and quality checks

A surveyor takes a sample, photographs the seal and records the position, then sends it to the office when back in a safe area.

Terminals03

Island storage loading

A terminal operator at a jetty loads a bunker tanker and records the line-up with the same device used for tank rounds.

Questions · Singapore marine and bunkering

Frequently asked questions

Does the phone replace the ship’s radio?

No. Marine communications rules apply to vessels. The handset covers calls, photographs and records around them.

Is heavy fuel oil a hazardous area problem?

Residual fuel has a high flashpoint, but the deck, the tanks and the cargo handling around a tanker still create classified areas. Which areas count is decided by the vessel and operator, not by the product alone.

What about LNG or methanol bunkering?

Those fuels have different gas groups and temperatures. The IS-04Z1 marking target is IIC, but a site must check the temperature class against its own fuel.

Can SAMS say which suppliers will use it?

No. SAMS has no named customers in Singapore and this page does not imply any. Certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
