Explosion proof mobile phone for Petrochemicals in Singapore

Singapore’s petrochemical industry is concentrated on Jurong Island, where crackers, oxide and glycol units and specialty chemical plants share one set of roads, pipe corridors and emergency arrangements. This page is for the process safety, maintenance and IT teams who must decide what explosion proof mobile phone in Singapore may be carried around those plants. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

An explosion proof mobile phone for Singapore’s petrochemical plants

Jurong Island was made by joining several small islands into one reclaimed site, and JTC Corporation manages it as the landlord. Plants there are operated by different companies but crowd onto one island, which is why shutdown timing, shared utilities and the neighbour’s emergency plan matter as much as the plant’s own. Crackers produce ethylene and propylene, and downstream units make oxide, glycol, polyols, acids, specialty polymers and additives. That produces four distinct classifications on a single site. Hydrogen and acetylene are group IIC. Ethylene and ethylene oxide are IIB. Many solvents are IIA. Powder handling, catalyst loading and additive bagging are combustible dust problems and fall under Zone 21 or 22. A handset that can be taken into all of them has to be marked for IIC and rated for dust, which is the reason the design target is Zone 1 and Zone 21.

What Jurong Island does to a handset

Compared with a single plant, Jurong Island adds scale and density. The next fence line is a different company’s rules, and one shutdown may overlap another.

Hydrogen and acetylene set the gas group

Because IIC gases appear in cracker and treating service, a device marked IIB only is not enough for a plant-wide fleet. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, with the temperature class on the certificate checked against each area’s limit.

Powder next to vapour

Polymer finishing and additive bagging create dust areas inside the same fence as gas areas. A single device designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 saves issuing two handsets to the same person.

Turnarounds that crowd the island

A shutdown brings hundreds of contractors for a few weeks, and neighbouring plants may do the same. Android Enterprise enrolment lets a fleet be issued and recalled by job.

Heat, humidity and wet steel

Warm, humid air and daily rain are constant. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design response, and the certificate states the ambient range.

Approval is plant by plant

Each occupier runs its own contractor equipment approval and permit system, so a national certificate is the start of a conversation. We do not claim a listing at any plant; ask each operator’s procurement and HSE team what they need.

Use cases · Singapore petrochemicals

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work on Jurong Island

Operations01

Cracker and derivative unit rounds

An operator logs readings, photographs a defect and calls the control room from the same device, with a position stamp that tells maintenance exactly which line.

Turnaround02

Shutdown work across crowded sites

A coordination room that wants a photograph of a blind or isolation tag can get it from the work front without the supervisor leaving the area.

Logistics03

Jetty and tank farm transfers

A product movement operator at a jetty can confirm the line-up and hose condition, and send the record to the plant and the terminal in one step.

Questions · Singapore petrochemicals

Frequently asked questions

Why does a petrochemical plant need IIC when most gases are IIA or IIB?

Because the exceptions are in the process. Hydrogen and acetylene are both group IIC, and a cracker or treating unit can contain them. A device that cannot enter those areas is of limited use for a plant-wide fleet.

Can one handset cover dust and gas?

That is the design target. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, and an operator’s own hazard assessments say which areas are classified for what.

Does Jurong Island have a single approval for contractor equipment?

No. The landlord manages the estate, but each occupier runs its own site rules. Ask each plant what it needs from an equipment supplier.

Can SAMS name customers on Jurong Island?

No. SAMS has not named customers and this page does not imply any. Certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
