Explosion proof mobile phone for Seatrium in Singapore

Seatrium builds and converts offshore rigs, floating production units and ships, and repairs vessels, in yards that include Tuas Boulevard, Tuas, Benoi and Sembawang. This page is for the HSE, yard operations and IT teams who must decide what explosion proof mobile phone in Singapore may be carried onto a hull during gas trials, tank entry and hot work. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

An explosion proof mobile phone for Seatrium’s Singapore yards

Seatrium was formed when Sembcorp Marine completed its acquisition of Keppel’s offshore and marine division in February 2023 and took the new name later that year. In Singapore it brings the former Keppel yards at Tuas Boulevard, Tuas and Benoi together with the Sembawang yard. A yard is not a classified plant. It becomes one, temporarily and in patches, when something flammable is on the hull. A tanker arrives for repair with cargo residue in its tanks and has to be gas-freed before anyone can weld. An FPSO conversion reaches hydrocarbon commissioning and then has live gas and oil systems in a quayside berth. Coating and painting inside tanks release solvent vapour. Each of these creates a Zone 1 or Zone 2 area that exists for a shift or a month and is then declared gone. The question for a handset is not whether the yard is classified, but whether the person carrying it can enter the space that is.

Yards and work types

Tuas Boulevard Yard
Large integrated yard for offshore, marine construction and ship repair.
Tuas Yard and Benoi Yard
Repair and conversion work on vessels alongside and in the dock.
Sembawang Yard
Ship repair and conversion on the north coast.
Rig and FPSO projects
Topsides integration and commissioning that bring process hazards into a yard.
Ship repair
Tankers and gas carriers arriving with residues in cargo tanks.
Subcontractor teams
Specialist trades such as blasting, coating, electrical and insulation firms.

Temporary classified conditions

Cargo and slop tanks
Gas-freeing, tank cleaning and entry under a gas-free certificate.
Hot work near hydrocarbon systems
Welding and cutting that is only permitted when the area is tested.
Hydrocarbon commissioning
Introduction of live oil and gas to topsides at the quay.
Coating and painting
Solvent vapour inside enclosed tanks and void spaces.
Pump rooms and engine spaces
Fuel and lubricant vapour in confined, ventilated spaces.
Offices, workshops and stores
Outside the hazardous boundary, with normal rules.

What a shipyard does to a handset

A yard moves. The job today is not where the job was last week, and the classified area follows the hull rather than the map.

Permits that change daily

Each job needs its own permit, and a gas-free certificate may expire at the end of a shift. A handset that stays with the person lets the permit, the test record and the photograph live together rather than on separate pieces of paper.

Steel, spray and heat

Hot decks, spray, dust and constant handling are normal. IP68 sealing and rugged build suit that, and the certificate states the temperature class and ambient range the marking holds for.

Large sites on foot

A yard is long and a ship is taller than it looks. A 4,000 mAh battery covers a full shift of walking, calls, photographs and position fixes without a trip back to a safe-area charger.

Subcontractor crews from many places

Yards run many contractor teams on one site. Android Enterprise enrolment from an existing MDM console lets Seatrium’s IT team issue handsets by job, limit the apps and withdraw them at handover.

Supplier approval is Seatrium’s process

How Seatrium assesses equipment suppliers is for its procurement and HSE teams to say. We do not claim any listing or relationship; send us their requirements and we will respond in writing.

Use cases · Seatrium

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Seatrium

Ship repair01

Tank entry and gas-free checks

A supervisor at a cargo tank hatch photographs the gas-test reading and the entry log, then reports status from the same device. The photograph is stamped with time and position.

Offshore02

Commissioning on an FPSO or rig

When hydrocarbons are introduced at the quay, the commissioning team works in live classified areas. A handset that can sit in the pocket keeps the punch list and the call to the control room with the person.

Subcontractors03

Hot work permits across several yards

A hot work fire watcher can record the area check and the photograph, and the permit officer sees it without walking across the yard.

Questions · Seatrium

Frequently asked questions

A yard is not a hazardous area. Why would it need an Ex phone?

Parts of it are, temporarily. Cargo tanks being gas-freed, hydrocarbon commissioning on a topsides module and solvent coating in a tank are all classified conditions. The phone is for those conditions, not for the offices.

Does the device replace the gas detector?

No. A handset is not a gas detection instrument, and the permit and gas-free certificate still rely on the correct testing equipment. The phone carries the records, calls and photographs around it.

Is there a Seatrium agreement with SAMS?

No. This page describes the conditions in the yards and what the device is designed for. It is not an endorsement or supply agreement.

What is claimed about the merger on this page?

Only that Sembcorp Marine completed its acquisition of Keppel’s offshore and marine division in 2023 and became Seatrium, which is how company announcements describe it.
