Hydrogen means the IIC question comes up
Hydroprocessing puts hydrogen in the picture, so the gas group on the drawing matters. The marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the certificate will state the scope once it is issued.
SATORP is the Aramco and TotalEnergies refinery and petrochemical complex at Jubail, built to run Arabian Heavy crude. This page is for the operations, HSE and telecoms people who need an explosion proof mobile phone for SATORP in Saudi Arabia, and it describes the areas such a handset would be carried into and what the IS-04Z1 is being designed to do there. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx and dual-parent documentation in progress
SATORP is owned 62.5 per cent by Saudi Aramco and 37.5 per cent by TotalEnergies. It was designed for 400,000 barrels a day of heavy crude and is a full-conversion refinery, which means residue is upgraded rather than sold as fuel oil. The route there runs through a large delayed coker, hydrotreaters and hydrocracking, with sulphur recovery for the sour feed and integrated petrochemical units downstream. Hydrogen is present throughout the hydroprocessing units and falls in gas group IIC, hydrogen sulphide is present on the sour side, and petroleum coke and sulphur are handled as solids. The site lies within Jubail Industrial City, so most of the people moving through it are either shift operators or contractors on a planned job.
The classified area at a refinery of this kind is large, continuous and hot. These are the points that matter once a handset has passed the certificate check and is in an operator's hand on the unit.

Handling coke and sulphur brings combustible solids into the plant alongside the gas. The device is designed for Zone 21 dust as well as Zone 1 gas, and IP68 sealing keeps the fine material out.
An Aramco-style vendor review and a European, ATEX-influenced engineering culture can look at the same file with different questions. The IECEx documentation is being built to be readable by either, with the ATEX marking target stated plainly.
Turnaround work at a refinery of this size puts a large contractor crew through a limited number of gates. Handsets enrolled in an existing console can be issued, configured and collected centrally.
Furnace areas, hot piping and open desert summers all raise the temperature around the handset. The temperature class on the certificate is what the instrumentation engineer checks against the area's maximum surface temperature.
An operator walking the hydrotreater or the coker records readings, photographs a flange weeping and reports it to the control room without leaving the unit. One enrolled handset replaces the radio and camera that would otherwise be carried separately.
A contractor gang entering a coker or hydrocracker during a shutdown works to a permit issued that morning. The handset carries the permit application and site directory, and the operator's console controls what else is installed.
An inspector covering the tank farm needs a position and a photograph for each finding. Four-constellation GNSS and the 50 MP camera give a record that the maintenance planner can act on without a site visit.
That is for SATORP's own engineering and procurement teams to say. Ask them directly for the requirements that apply to a communications device, and what evidence they want with it.
Only indirectly. It tells you both companies have a stake in the engineering outcome, so expect questions from either side. It does not give any shareholder the right to approve a supplier on SATORP's behalf.
It is being designed to Ex ib IIC, the gas group that includes hydrogen. The certificate will state its precise scope once issued, and an area drawing needs checking for temperature class as well as gas group.
No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress ahead of Q4 2026, and no vendor approval can exist before the certificate does.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Saudi Arabia. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
