Explosion proof mobile phone for oil and gas in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabian oil and gas runs end to end inside classified areas, from wellsites in the Eastern Province to export berths on both coasts. This page is for operators, contractors and HSE teams comparing options for an explosion proof mobile phone for oil and gas in Saudi Arabia, and it follows the product chain from wellhead to ship. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for the Saudi oil and gas chain

The chain starts at the fields: Ghawar, with its gas-oil separation plants, Shaybah and Khurais, and offshore production such as Safaniya in the Gulf. Crude is stabilised at Abqaiq and moves to Ras Tanura for export on the Gulf, or across the Kingdom by the East-West pipeline to Yanbu on the Red Sea. Associated and non-associated gas goes to plants such as Hawiyah, Haradh, Uthmaniyah and Fadhili, where it is compressed, treated and split into sales gas and NGL. Refineries at Ras Tanura, Jubail and Yanbu close the loop. The hazard profile changes along the way: sour gas and crude vapour upstream, hydrogen in hydroprocessing downstream, and long loading lines at the terminals. A single area drawing never tells the whole story, so the sector view is useful mainly for working out which gas groups and temperature classes recur.

What the oil and gas chain asks of a handset

The Kingdom's oil and gas workforce works over distances that few other countries match. The points below are the ones that decide whether a handset is useful, once its certificate has been checked.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

One specification along the whole chain

Zone 1 gas runs from the separation plant to the jetty. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, with the marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so an operator does not need one device for upstream and another for the refinery.

Distances between sites

Shaybah and the offshore platforms are reached by long drives, boats or helicopters. A failed handset is not a same-day problem, so IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified accordingly, with an enrolled spare ready to go.

Sour gas means the detector comes first

Hydrogen sulphide is toxic well below the flammable range, so personal gas detectors are the first line of defence. A handset is not a substitute, and the site rules on what else is carried will be set by the operator.

Turnaround surges at gas plants and refineries

A planned shutdown multiplies the contractor population and the permit traffic. Enrolled handsets can be configured centrally and collected at the end of the job.

A single console for a large estate

Enrolment in an existing MDM console lets an operator push the camera policy and application list to units spread over several sites, which suits an estate that crosses regions.

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work along the chain

Upstream01

Wellsite and separation plant rounds

Operators visiting wellsites and separation plants cover long distances. A handset with four-constellation GNSS and a 50 MP camera records the position and condition of each item on the round.

Gas02

Compression and treating plant maintenance

A maintenance technician in a gas plant needs the job card, the isolation certificate and the photographs in one device, so that the record is made where the work is done.

Export03

Terminal and jetty operations

A jetty operator confirms line-ups and reports leaks while loading. The handset has to survive salt spray, glare and gloves, and still work as a phone.

Questions · Oil and gas

Frequently asked questions

Which gas groups should we expect on a Saudi oil and gas site?

Mostly IIA and IIB hydrocarbons, with hydrogen at the refineries in group IIC. The area classification drawing is the authority, and the marking target for the IS-04Z1 is IIC, which is the broadest group.

Does the IS-04Z1 replace a personal gas detector?

No. A phone is not a gas detector. Where the operator requires detectors, they stay, and the handset sits alongside them.

Which operator pages should we read next?

Start with the pages on Saudi Aramco, SATORP and YASREF, and the site pages for Ras Tanura, Jubail and Yanbu. Each lists the units and approval points for that operator.

Is the IS-04Z1 available for oil and gas sites yet?

No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress ahead of Q4 2026, and it will not be supplied into a classified area before the certificate exists.
