Explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemical sites in Saudi Arabia

Jubail, Yanbu and Rabigh hold some of the largest petrochemical complexes in the Middle East, run by SABIC affiliates and by joint ventures such as Sadara and Petro Rabigh. This page is for process, maintenance and HSE staff comparing options for an explosion proof mobile phone for petrochemical sites in Saudi Arabia, and it covers the hazards that recur across them. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Saudi petrochemical complexes

Jubail and Yanbu are industrial cities managed by the Royal Commission, with shared roads, ports and utilities. Rabigh, on the Red Sea north of Jeddah, is home to Petro Rabigh, a refining and petrochemicals venture between Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical. At Jubail, Sadara Chemical, owned by Aramco and Dow, sits among the SABIC affiliates. These sites crack ethane and heavier feeds into ethylene and propylene, and turn those into polyethylene, polypropylene, glycols and other products. The hazards are consistent. Ethylene and propylene are group IIB gases, hydrogen and acetylene are group IIC, and polymer powder in reactors and silos is a combustible dust. Fertiliser and methanol plants add ammonia and flammable liquids. A handset used across them needs a gas group wide enough for the hydrogen and dust protection for the powder.

What integrated petrochemical sites ask of a handset

A petrochemical complex has more people moving through it than most refineries, and the people move between companies. The following points matter once the certificate and the area drawing have been checked.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Gas and dust in the same plant

The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust. Reactors, silos and extrusion halls fall under the dust side, while crackers and compressors fall under gas, so one specification covers both on paper. The drawings decide where.

Hydrogen and acetylene mean IIC

Many process units fall in group IIB, but hydrogen and acetylene fall in IIC. The marking target for the device is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which is the broader group.

Shared sites, separate companies

Contractors and inspectors move between neighbouring plants within a single industrial city. Each operator runs its own approval, so ask each one what it requires and do not assume a handset accepted at one gate will pass at the next.

Cracker turnarounds draw large crews

A turnaround brings a short, intense surge of contractors. Enrolled handsets can be issued with a profile for the job and recovered at the end, which is easier than managing personal phones at the gate.

Heat, humidity and polymer fines

Jubail is on the Gulf and Yanbu and Rabigh are on the Red Sea, with different climates. IP68 sealing is specified for fine powder and for wash-down in all three.

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at petrochemical sites

Olefins01

Cracker rounds and turnaround work

Operators and contractors working around cracked-gas compressors and furnaces carry the permit, the drawings and the camera in one device.

Polymers02

Silo and extrusion hall inspection

Powder handling is where a dust record matters. An inspector can log a build-up with a position and a photograph and attach it to the equipment tag.

Logistics03

Jetty and tank farm coordination

Operators at the loading arms confirm line-ups and report faults. A handset that handles salt spray and glare keeps the record in one place.

Questions · Petrochemical

Frequently asked questions

Which companies run which complexes?

SABIC affiliates run most of the Jubail and Yanbu plants. Sadara at Jubail is owned by Aramco and Dow, and Petro Rabigh at Rabigh by Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical. Each page for an operator lists the specifics.

Do all petrochemical sites need the same rating?

No. A cracker is mostly gas, a polymer plant adds dust, a fertiliser plant adds ammonia. The area classification drawing gives the gas group, dust group and temperature class for each.

Who should we ask about approvals?

The procurement and HSE teams at the specific operator. SABIC affiliates, Sadara and Petro Rabigh are separate companies, so each will have its own list of requirements.

Is the IS-04Z1 available for petrochemical sites yet?

No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress ahead of Q4 2026, and it will not be supplied into a classified area before the certificate exists.
