Explosion proof mobile phone for SABIC sites

SABIC's chemical and fertiliser plants at Jubail and Yanbu are made up of separate affiliate companies, each with its own gates, its own operations team and its own equipment lists. This page is for the engineers and HSE staff who need an explosion proof mobile phone for SABIC sites in Saudi Arabia, and it explains how the IS-04Z1 is being prepared for that affiliate-by-affiliate reality. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for SABIC affiliates at Jubail and Yanbu

At Jubail the SABIC family includes ethylene and polymer producers such as Petrokemya, Saudi Kayan and Sharq, the methanol and MTBE producer Ibn Sina, and the fertiliser producer SABIC Agri-Nutrients, formerly SAFCO. At Yanbu the crackers and polymer lines belong to affiliates such as Yansab and Yanpet. Each runs a different mix of hazards. A cracker has ethylene and propylene, which fall in gas group IIB, alongside hydrogen in group IIC and the hydrocarbon liquids of the quench and fractionation sections. Polyethylene and polypropylene powder is a combustible dust and turns up in reactors, silos and extrusion halls. A fertiliser plant adds ammonia, a gas in group IIA, and granulation and bagging where dust control matters. A handset that will be carried between these has to hold up under every one of them.

What SABIC's affiliate structure means for a handset

A device that is acceptable in one SABIC affiliate is not automatically acceptable in the next, so the specification has to be easy to explain several times over. The points below are the ones that come up when an affiliate's engineering and HSE staff review a handset.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh

A different procurement office behind each gate

Buying authority for plant equipment has historically sat with the affiliate. Ask each affiliate's procurement and HSE teams what a supplier must provide, and expect to repeat the exercise rather than assume one group-wide approval.

Gas and dust on the same site

The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust. A cracker, a polymer line and a fertiliser granulator can then be covered by one specification, though the gas group, temperature class and dust group on the area drawing still decide where it is permitted.

Contractors moving between neighbouring plants

Jubail and Yanbu are laid out as industrial cities, and an inspector may work at two or three plants in a week. Enrolment in an existing MDM console lets each affiliate apply its own policy to the same hardware.

Two coasts, two climates

Jubail sits on the Gulf and Yanbu on the Red Sea, and the salt air and humidity are not the same as dry inland heat. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified for both.

Aramco's majority holding, still separate plants

Aramco holds a majority of SABIC, and the two companies' practices may draw closer over time. The vendor file is being built on the IECEx documentation so it can serve either review, without assuming which standard will apply.

Use cases · SABIC

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work across SABIC sites

Olefins01

Cracker turnaround at Jubail

A cracker shutdown brings hundreds of contractors through a single gate in a few weeks. A common enrolled handset carries the permit application and site directory, and the camera policy can be set for the duration.

Polymers02

Reactor hall and silo inspections

A polymer plant's powder handling is where dust meets process gas. An operator can record a seal leak or a build-up with a photograph tied to a GNSS position and the equipment tag.

Fertiliser03

Granulation and bagging rounds

Rounds through a granulator hall are short on landmarks and long on dust. IP68 sealing keeps the handset working after the area has been washed down, and the operator avoids carrying a separate camera.

Questions · SABIC

Frequently asked questions

Is SABIC one buyer or several?

Historically it has been several. Individual affiliates have run their own vendor and engineering approvals under shared group policy. The practical step is to ask the affiliate you are working with for its own requirements.

Does Aramco's holding in SABIC change the approval route?

Possibly over time, but nothing on this page should be read as a change to any affiliate's current process. The documentation is built around the IECEx certificate so that either company's engineering group can review it.

Can a single device cover an olefins plant and a fertiliser plant?

That is the design target, with Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust in one specification. Ammonia sits in gas group IIA and the device is marked for IIC, which is the broader group. The certificate will state the exact scope once issued.

Has any SABIC affiliate approved the IS-04Z1?

No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress for a Q4 2026 launch, and no vendor approval can exist before the certificate does.
