Explosion proof mobile phone for Ma’aden, Ras Al Khair

Ma'aden is the Kingdom's mining company, and its Ras Al Khair complex on the Gulf coast turns phosphate rock and bauxite into fertiliser, alumina and aluminium. This page is for the engineers and HSE staff who want an explosion proof mobile phone for Ma'aden in Saudi Arabia, and it takes a more careful look at which hazards actually apply there. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Ma'aden at Ras Al Khair

Ras Al Khair is an industrial city about 75 km north-west of Jubail, linked to Ma'aden's northern mines by a mineral railway of roughly 1,500 km. The phosphate side includes sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and ammonia plants and a granulation plant for di-ammonium phosphate. The aluminium side, developed with Alcoa, covers an alumina refinery, a smelter and a rolling mill. It is tempting to describe this as a dust site, but the details matter. Alumina is an oxide and is not normally treated as a combustible dust, and phosphate rock is not usually either. The real hazards are narrower and more varied: ammonia and natural gas as flammable gases, sulphur as a combustible dust, carbon anode and coke fines, aluminium metal dust in scrap and rolling operations, and hydrogen from battery and electrolytic services. The area classification report, not the industry label, decides what a handset needs.

Operations at Ras Al Khair

Phosphate complex
Sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, ammonia and DAP granulation.
Alumina refinery
Processing bauxite delivered by rail from the north.
Aluminium smelter
Potrooms, carbon anode handling and casting.
Rolling mill
Aluminium sheet production, with hot oil and emulsion systems.
Mineral railway
Brings ore and bauxite to the site over about 1,500 km.

Where the classified areas are

Ammonia plant and storage
Flammable ammonia gas, group IIA, plus toxic exposure limits that shape entry rules.
Sulphur melting and handling
Sulphur dust and molten sulphur, a Zone 21 and Zone 22 candidate.
Anode and carbon handling
Carbon dust in the anode plant and bake furnace areas.
Casthouse and furnaces
Natural gas burners and metal dust in scrap and dross handling.
Rolling mill oil systems
Oil mist and lubricant vapour around hot mills.
Fuel gas distribution
Natural gas headers and regulating stations around the site.
Built for local conditions

What a mineral processing site asks of a handset

Heavy industry on the Gulf coast is hard on equipment before any classification question arises. These are the points a Ma'aden engineer would raise about the IS-04Z1 once the area drawing has been checked.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Which hazard does the area drawing actually name?

The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust. Ammonia is group IIA and the marking target covers IIC, so gas is covered. For dust, check the dust group and the maximum surface temperature, which depend on the material.

Distances across a large plant

Ras Al Khair is spread out, with the phosphate and aluminium plants a drive apart. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a working shift, and the handset should not need to return to a safe area to be charged.

Fine dust and wash-down

Dust gets into everything, and plant areas are hosed down. IP68 sealing is what keeps the handset serviceable through both, and it is worth confirming how the speaker and charging contacts are protected during evaluation.

Photography and process confidentiality

A smelter and a phosphate complex hold process information that the operator will not want photographed carelessly. The camera can be restricted by policy from the MDM console, rather than by leaving the camera out.

Two plants, one device policy

Phosphate and aluminium run under separate operating teams. Enrolment in Android Enterprise lets one console apply different profiles to each, using the same hardware and the same support route.

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Ras Al Khair

Process01

Ammonia and sulphuric acid plant rounds

Operators doing rounds through the ammonia loop or the acid plant record readings and photograph a leaking joint. A handset that can go into the classified area saves the return trip to the control room.

Smelter02

Casthouse and carbon plant inspection

Maintenance engineers in the casthouse and the anode area deal with natural gas, hot metal and carbon dust at once. One handset carries the permit, the job card and the photographs.

Shutdown03

Planned outages and contractor work

Contractors arriving for a planned outage need a handset that can be enrolled and issued quickly. Policies on cameras and applications can be set for the duration of the job.

Questions · Ma’aden

Frequently asked questions

Is alumina dust treated as combustible at Ma'aden?

Not normally. Alumina is an oxide. The combustible dusts on an aluminium site are metal powder and carbon. The site's own dust hazard assessment is the authority, and that is where to confirm what applies.

Does the IS-04Z1 cover ammonia areas?

Ammonia is a flammable gas in group IIA with a high ignition temperature, and the device is marked for IIC. Toxic exposure is a separate question handled by gas detection and entry rules, not by the Ex marking.

Does Ma'aden use the same vendor lists as Aramco or SABIC?

No, it is a separate company. Ask Ma'aden's procurement and HSE teams what they require from a supplier of hazardous-area equipment, and what documents they want to see.

Has Ma'aden approved the IS-04Z1?

No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress ahead of Q4 2026, and nothing will be supplied into a classified area before the certificate exists.
