A transmission operator has fewer people and more kilometres than a producer or a refinery. The classified places are scattered and mostly small: compressor stations, pressure reduction and metering stations, pig launcher and receiver traps, valve nodes and the delivery points where gas is odorised before it leaves the system. The BRUA corridor built across the country added a 479 km pipeline and three compressor stations at Podișor, Bibești and Jupa, the last with two Solar Turbines compressor units of 4.6 MW each. A further project to bring Black Sea gas ashore and into the system at Podișor is linked to the Neptun Deep development. The gas is natural gas, normally gas group IIA with a T1 class, so the question for a handset is less the gas than the number of sites, the pressure and the volume that could be released. Work in a classified area is controlled by permit, and the nearest colleague is often a long drive away.
The device requirements are shaped by distance and by a small number of people doing safety-critical tasks alone.
A compressor station may be a long way from the nearest office, so the handset is also the operator’s link to the dispatcher. 4G LTE and Wi-Fi give that link, and four-constellation GNSS gives the dispatcher a position that does not depend on a description.
A pig launch is a sequence of valve operations, permits and confirmations. A handset can carry the checklist and photograph the trap closure, so the record is made at the trap rather than reconstructed afterwards.
Compressor halls are warm and noisy, and the handset has to be usable with gloves and ear defenders. The certified ambient range will be published once the certificate fixes it; the T4 temperature class target is what a station engineer checks against the area classification.
HG 1058/2006 puts the employer in charge of the explosion protection document. The gas group, marking string and declaration of conformity supplied with the device can be quoted in that document without paraphrase.
Annual station shutdowns bring turbine specialists and instrument contractors. Android Enterprise enrolment lets the operator issue devices for the campaign and withdraw them afterwards.
An operator records turbine readings, checks gas detection status and photographs a seal leak, with the position and time attached, and the dispatcher sees it as it is sent.
During an in-line inspection, crews work at traps along the line. A common enrolled handset keeps the permit, the pig tracking record and the team’s positions in one place.
A new station brings commissioning engineers, vendors and the operator’s own staff together. A managed pool of handsets avoids personal phones in the classified halls.
Natural gas is gas group IIA, so IIA would meet the area classification on its own. A IIC marking target means one device can be issued across a transmission estate and into other sites, such as hydrogen-bearing industry, without being re-purchased.
