Explosion proof mobile phone for Romgaz in Romania

Romgaz is Romania’s main natural gas producer, headquartered in Mediaș, with production concentrated in the Transylvanian Basin, a power plant at Iernut and a stake in the Neptun Deep Black Sea development. This page covers what an explosion proof mobile phone in Romania has to do for a gas producer: methane, compressor and drying stations, and many small sites far from one another. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where gas production is classified

Romania’s gas history starts in Transylvania. The first deposit was found at Sărmășel in Mureș county in 1909, and the basin around Mediaș and Târgu Mureș is still the centre of Romgaz production. A producing gas field of this kind is a long chain of small classified places: wellheads, separators, drying and dehydration stations, compressor stations and metering points, joined by flowlines and visited on a route. The gas is predominantly methane, so the gas group is normally IIA with a T1 temperature class, which is the least demanding case for ignition energy but not for the volume that can be released from a pressurised system. Alongside production, gas is stored in depleted fields at Bilciurești, Urziceni, Bălăceanca, Ghercești and Sărmășel by the storage operator Depogaz, and Romgaz also generates power at Iernut. With the 2027 first-gas target for Neptun Deep, offshore and landfall work joins the picture.

Operations

Mediaș
Company headquarters, in the middle of the Transylvanian production area.
Târgu Mureș area
Gas fields, gathering lines and treatment in Mureș county.
Sărmășel
Site of the first Romanian gas discovery, now also an underground storage field.
Iernut power plant
Gas-fired generation in Mureș county; turbine halls and gas supply skids.
Neptun Deep
Offshore development shared with OMV Petrom, with first gas targeted for 2027.
Storage fields
Bilciurești, Urziceni, Bălăceanca, Ghercești and Sărmășel, each with injection and withdrawal compression.

Classified situations

Wellheads
Zone 1 or Zone 2 around valves, sampling points and pressure relief outlets.
Dehydration units
Glycol and gas drying stations; vent and flare areas classified separately.
Compressor stations
Gas-engine or turbine halls with ventilation and gas detection as the primary control.
Metering and pressure reduction
Cabinets and runs where regulators vent small volumes of gas.
Condensate handling
Light liquids at tanks and loading points, gas group IIA or IIB.
Storage injection wells
High pressure wellhead areas with periodic maintenance campaigns.

What an explosion proof mobile phone has to do for a Romanian gas producer

Few staff at a gas field work in groups. These are the design points that follow from that.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

One person, many sites

A producing area can be covered by a single operator who drives between sites. Four-constellation GNSS and a 4G LTE link let a supervisor see where that person is, and the same fix is stamped on each inspection photograph taken with the 50 MP camera.

A shift without a charger

There is rarely a safe-area power point at a wellsite or a remote metering station. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to carry a full round with the work-order application running, rather than most of one.

Mud, rain and snow

Transylvanian winters and spring thaw leave wellsites wet and muddy. IP68 sealing and rugged construction are meant to survive wet ground and a hose-down at the end of the round.

Methane, hydrogen and the marking

For methane the IIC target is more than is strictly needed, which means one handset can be issued across the estate. The certificate’s gas group and T4 class are what the explosion protection document will quote.

Managed like any other phone

Android Enterprise enrolment lets a gas producer apply the same policy, application list and remote wipe the estate already uses, and Romanian is available in the interface.

Use cases · Romgaz

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at a gas producer.

Production01

Wellsite and station rounds

An operator records pressures at a drying station, photographs a gland weeping condensate and sends both to the control room without leaving the classified boundary to find a signal.

Maintenance02

Compressor overhaul at a storage field

Contract fitters arrive for a short campaign. A common enrolled handset carries the permit, the isolation list and the daily report, then is cleared when they leave.

Safety03

Lone worker check-ins

A worker visiting an unmanned site can report arrival and departure, with a position fix, so the control room knows who is inside a classified boundary at any moment.

Questions · Romgaz

Frequently asked questions

Is methane an easier case for an explosion proof phone?

In terms of ignition energy, yes: methane is gas group IIA. But the area is still classified, and the equipment must still be certified for it. A IIC-rated handset covers IIA and IIB areas too, which is why it can be issued across a mixed estate.

Who would decide whether the handset is acceptable at a Romgaz site?

The operator’s own HSE, instrumentation and procurement teams, working from the certificate and the explosion protection document for that area. We do not claim any approval, programme or relationship with Romgaz.

Does it work at a remote wellsite with weak coverage?

It supports 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, but coverage is a network question that no handset can fix. The practical answer is to survey the sites with the operator’s own network before a trial.

Is the device certified now?

No. Certification to ATEX 2014/34/EU, IECEx and NEC 500 is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch, and nothing will be supplied into a classified area before the certificate exists.
