Salt, wind and spray
Coastal sites subject electronics to salt-laden air and rain. IP68 sealing and rugged build target that, although the certified ambient range will be published only when the certificate fixes it.
Rompetrol Rafinare operates two refineries in Romania: Petromidia on the Black Sea coast at Năvodari and Vega at Ploiești, with a petrochemical division on the Petromidia platform. This page is for the people who have to answer what an explosion proof mobile phone in Romania should be allowed to do on a coastal refinery site, in a turnaround and on a loading jetty. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification programme in progress
Petromidia sits at Năvodari on the Black Sea coast, close to the port of Midia and not far from Constanța. It is a large fuel refinery, and the petrochemical units on the same platform belong to the same site problem. Vega, in Ploiești, is the older of the two and is described in company and press material as the only Romanian producer of bitumen and hexane. Hexane is a solvent, gas group IIB with a low flash point and a wide flammable range, and bitumen means heated tanks and loading. At the coast, hot gas oil and naphtha are handled next to the sea wind, salt and a long list of contractors for the planned stoppages that refineries run on a fixed cycle. A handset at Petromidia may spend the day in a unit with hydrogen, and an hour later on a loading arm.
A refinery’s demands on a device are well known to its instrument engineers. These are the ones that matter for Petromidia and Vega.

The planned stoppages at Petromidia and Vega bring many contractor crews into the fence at once. Managed enrolment lets the operator issue, restrict and recover handsets as crews arrive and leave, instead of relying on personal phones.
The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. Hydrogen units set the gas group; the T4 class is what a refinery engineer compares against the hottest surface and the autoignition of the products nearby.
A 50 MP camera and GNSS position let an inspector attach a photograph to a line number and a place, so an inspection finding can be acted on without a search for where it was taken.
A refinery needs to restrict photography in some areas. Policy can be pushed from the management console, so the camera can be limited rather than the phone being swapped for another model.
During an overhaul a supervisor walks a unit and records open items with photographs and tags. A device carried in the classified area removes the walk back to the cabin to type them up.
Loading staff at a jetty or gantry need a handset that tolerates spray, carries a loading checklist and reaches the control room by voice or message.
A technician checking a pump or transmitter needs documents, readings and a camera together, rather than a clipboard and a second device left in the cabin.
Both are refineries with hydrocarbon and hydrogen risks, so the IIC target covers either. Each area’s own classification still decides where the handset may be taken, and the final certificate governs the use.
We have no verified knowledge of a published Rompetrol Rafinare supplier programme and will not invent one. Ask the refinery’s procurement and HSE teams for their requirements for equipment documentation and site access.
It can be managed. The management console can restrict camera use by policy, which is more practical than buying a phone without one.
No. SAMS has no customer, pilot or supply agreement with Rompetrol Rafinare, and the IS-04Z1 is not yet certified.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Romania. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
