Not inside the tank
The interior of a crude or fuel tank is Zone 0. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, so it does not go inside a tank, and tank entry stays on the operator’s own procedures.
PERN moves crude oil and fuel across Poland: pipelines from Płock to Gdańsk and from the east, crude tank farms near Płock, at Adamowo and at Gdańsk, and a chain of fuel bases from Koluszki to Boronów. This page is for PERN’s HSE and operations teams, and the contractors working on its terminals, who want an explosion proof mobile phone in Poland suited to tank farm work. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21; certification is in progress ahead of Q4 2026. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

A tank farm is a place where vapour is released slowly and constantly, which is why its classification is drawn around rim seals, vents, pumps and manifolds rather than around buildings. PERN’s crude bases are at Miszewko Strzałkowskie near Płock, at Adamowo and at the Gdańsk Oil Terminal; PERN describes close to three million cubic metres of crude storage across the three. Product moves on from Płock through the Płock–Koluszki–Boronów line to fuel bases that include Koluszki, Boronów, Rejowiec, Emilianów, Dębogórze and Małaszewicze. At Gdańsk the tank farm works with the marine terminal operated by Naftoport. Refineries such as the Orlen refineries at Płock and Gdańsk are both PERN’s customers and its neighbours.
A tank farm is open ground with a lot of steel on it. The questions are how far people walk, how cold it gets and what the handset may not be taken into.

Reading a level or taking a sample at the roof is a Zone 1 activity. A handset that can photograph the gauge and the sample label at that point removes a trip back to the office.
Valve stations are far from the next building. Four-constellation GNSS gives the line walker a coordinate, and IP68 keeps rain and mud from stopping the handset.
Fuel bases receive products in sequence and sample at each change. Dated photographs and readings entered at the point of sampling are harder to dispute later.
Tank inspection and maintenance bring specialist contractors in for weeks. Enrol the handset when they arrive and wipe it when they go, using your EMM or MDM.
Walk the tank shells, bunds and manifolds, photograph a leak or a corroded fitting, and record its location; the report then exists before the walk ends.
At a base such as Koluszki or Boronów a handset carries the receipt checklist into the loading area and records the sample, so the paper form is not rewritten later.
Two people on a long route need a call, a position and a camera. One Zone 1 handset replaces three items.
The rim seal area is normally treated as a Zone 1 or Zone 2 location, but it is the operator’s classification that decides. The device is designed for Zone 1; the inside of a tank is Zone 0 and outside its design target.
The marking target is T4, and many crude and product vapours have ignition temperatures well above that, but check the lowest auto-ignition temperature of anything stored at the site against the marking on the certificate.
That is PERN’s procurement and HSE process. Ask for its technical requirements for portable electronic equipment, and whether contractors’ equipment must be registered. SAMS has no relationship with PERN, and this page does not imply one.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Poland. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
