Explosion proof mobile phone for Poland, ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 21

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the refinery, fertiliser and gas terminal work where Polish teams actually meet an explosive atmosphere. It is pre-launch: the ATEX programme is running, and Polish operators and contractors can read the evidence and test a unit while it does.

Where it works in Poland

Polish hazardous area work sits in three belts. Refining and petrochemicals concentrate at Płock and on the coast at Gdańsk. Fertilisers, chlorine and polymers run from Włocławek through Puławy and Kędzierzyn-Koźle to Police, where the Polimery Police complex added a large new propylene and polypropylene site. Gas infrastructure has grown fastest, around the Świnoujście import terminal, the Baltic Pipe route and the compressor stations that feed them. Underground coal mining is a fourth world with its own equipment group, and it is described honestly below rather than counted in.

Operators and contractors such as Orlen, Orlen Południe and Anwil need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Płock, Gdańsk and Włocławek. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Polish plant conditions

Poland asks a device to do two awkward things at once: hold up in a cold, wet outdoor round, and be honest about where it may not go. These are the points a Polish evaluation tends to press on.

For evaluators in Poland, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Gas and dust under one programme; Group II, and we say so; Cold, wet rounds; A whole shift without leaving the zone; Polish on the screen and in the file; Contractors in and out.

Battery4,000 mAh

Gas and dust under one programme

The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and Zone 21 dust protection belongs to the same certification programme. On a fertiliser site that means the prilling tower, the bagging hall and the ammonia area can be covered by one handset rather than two.

Group II, and we say so

This is surface equipment. Underground coal mining is Group I, categories M1 and M2, a separate certificate for a methane and coal dust environment, and the IS-04Z1 is not being certified for it. Above ground at a mine, in workshops, on ventilation plant and at surface installations, Group II is what applies.

Cold, wet rounds

IP68 sealing and rugged build, which covers low temperature and humidity, are aimed at a January round on a tank farm or an LNG jetty rather than at office use. The ambient range the certificate fixes is published with the datasheet instead of promised in advance.

A whole shift without leaving the zone

There is no charging point inside a classified area, and the walk back to one costs a plant more than the battery does. The 4,000 mAh cell is sized for a full shift with the camera and a work order application in use.

Polish on the screen and in the file

Android 16 carries a Polish interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Polish alongside English. Polish buyers treat that as a condition of acceptance rather than a nicety.

Contractors in and out

4G LTE, Wi-Fi and NFC let one handset move between the plant network, site Wi-Fi and access control, and Android 16 with EMM and MDM lets it be enrolled, restricted, wiped and reissued as crews rotate through a turnaround.

Approvals in Poland

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

ATEX is the whole product-side requirement and Poland adds no national scheme on top of it. What Polish buyers really examine is the employer file, the dokument zabezpieczenia przed wybuchem that PIP can ask to see, and whether the equipment is Group II surface kit or the Group I kind an underground mine needs.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

On the product side Poland is short and unambiguous. ATEX 2014/34/EU is transposed by the Rozporządzenie Ministra Rozwoju of 6 June 2016 on requirements for equipment and protective systems intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere, published as Dz.U. 2016 poz. 817. A notified body certificate, the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking are the basis for placing the device on the Polish market, and there is no additional national Ex approval afterwards. Market surveillance sits with UOKiK through the Inspekcja Handlowa. The radio side runs under RED 2014/53/EU with UKE as the electronic communications authority. Plant teams will also know UDT from pressure and lifting inspections, but a handheld device does not pass through that route, and it is worth saying so early in an internal review so nobody waits for a UDT decision that will never be required.

The duty side is where a Polish evaluation actually happens. The Rozporządzenie Ministra Gospodarki of 8 July 2010 sets the minimum occupational health and safety requirements for workplaces where an explosive atmosphere may occur, and it obliges the employer to produce and maintain the dokument zabezpieczenia przed wybuchem. That document records the zone classification, the risk assessment and the equipment selection reasoning, and PIP, the State Labour Inspectorate, can ask to see it. Underground mining sits outside all of this: it is governed by the geological and mining law and supervised by WUG, the State Mining Authority, and equipment taken below ground has to be Group I, category M1 or M2, certified for methane and coal dust. That is a different certificate from the one this device is pursuing, and no amount of Group II documentation substitutes for it.

Use cases · Poland

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Poland includes: A postój remontowy at a large refinery; Dust areas at a nitrogen plant; Jetty and compressor station rounds; Road and rail loading gantries.

Refining01

A postój remontowy at a large refinery

A Płock or Gdańsk shutdown brings thousands of contractor personnel through the gate on rotating permits. When each crew carries a Zone 1 handset enrolled in the site console, the permit, the isolation photograph and the sign-off stay in one system, and a supervisor can confirm a blind list without walking back to the office.

Fertilisers02

Dust areas at a nitrogen plant

Prilling, granulation and bagging at Puławy or Police put a Zone 21 dust area a short walk from an ammonia or hydrogen line. A device covering both zones ends the habit of leaving one phone at a boundary and picking up another at the next, which is the point at which people simply stop carrying either.

LNG and gas03

Jetty and compressor station rounds

The Świnoujście terminal, the Baltic Pipe compressor stations and the underground storage sites are run by small crews doing long outdoor rounds. Equipment there has to keep a fix and a link at the far end of a site, because the nearest colleague may be several hundred metres and one gate away.

Terminals and loading04

Road and rail loading gantries

Loading racks at the pipeline tank farms and fuel terminals are classified areas where drivers, operators and inspectors meet all day. A handset that can photograph a seal, read an NFC tag on a bay and reach the control room from the gantry removes most of the walking from a routine that is repeated every hour.

How to buy · Poland

How to evaluate and buy in Poland

The device has not launched, so nothing here asks for an order. The sequence is arranged so that your internal approval work and our certification run alongside each other rather than one waiting for the other.

  1. 01

    Send the zone data

Tell us the zones, the gas or dust group and the temperature class from your classification drawings, whether the users are plant staff or contractors, and roughly how many handsets a site would carry. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification in progress, which is enough for a BHP specialist to draft the equipment selection entry and for procurement to open a supplier file.

  3. 03

Test a unit on the plant

Evaluation units go to Polish operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful Polish trial covers enrolment in your own management console, a cold outdoor round, use through a glove, dust area behaviour and a full shift with the camera in service.

  4. 04

    Agree the supply route

On completion of certification, supply runs through a Polish distribution partner or direct where a customer prefers that, with the documentation set a tender specification needs. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request against a defined quantity and configuration.

Questions · Poland

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Poland?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Poland →
Is the IS-04Z1 already ATEX certified for use in Poland?

No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the certification programme is in progress. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and nothing is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. Any supplier describing an uncertified handset differently is worth a second look.

Does Poland require a national approval on top of ATEX?

No. ATEX 2014/34/EU is transposed by the Rozporządzenie of 6 June 2016, Dz.U. 2016 poz. 817, and a notified body certificate with the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking is the complete product-side requirement. The obligations that follow belong to the employer, under the 2010 workplace regulation that PIP enforces.

Can it be taken into an underground coal mine?

No, and this is the one answer we will not soften. Underground mines need Group I equipment in category M1 or M2, certified for a methane and coal dust environment and supervised by WUG under the mining law. The IS-04Z1 targets Group II surface equipment. It suits mine surface installations, workshops and ventilation plant, not the workings below.

What is the price of an explosion proof mobile phone in Poland?

There is no list price before launch. Pre-launch pricing is quoted against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope, in the currency your contract uses, and it is issued in writing so a tender team can cite it. Evaluation units are issued under a trial agreement rather than sold.

Will there be Polish documentation and a Polish interface?

Yes. Android 16 carries a Polish interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Polish alongside English. The marking string, gas group and temperature class are supplied in a form your explosion protection document can quote directly.

What about radio approval and UKE?

The radio side runs under RED 2014/53/EU, which applies in Poland as it does across the union, with UKE as the national electronic communications authority. There is no separate Polish type approval for a CE marked handset, so the radio evidence sits in the same declaration of conformity as the rest.

How are repair and battery replacement handled?

Through the Polish partner SAMS is appointing or a facility recognised for the purpose. Ex equipment cannot be opened on site or repaired by a general phone workshop, because doing so voids the protection concept the certificate rests on. The repair and battery route is written down as part of the launch rather than improvised afterwards.
