Explosion proof mobile phone for Orlen in Poland

Orlen runs the Płock refinery and petrochemical complex, the Gdańsk refinery and, through group companies such as Anwil, plants beyond the refinery fence. This page is for Orlen’s HSE, maintenance and telecoms teams, and for the contractors who work to their permits, who need an explosion proof mobile phone in Poland that suits a Zone 1 / Zone 21 round. The IS-04Z1 is designed for that duty; certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone for Orlen: what is classified at Płock and Gdańsk

Płock is the centre of the group: a refinery and a petrochemical complex on the Vistula, with the olefins unit feeding polymer and PVC plants downstream. Crude arrives by pipeline, which is where explosion proof phone use at PERN tank farms meets the refinery fence. Gdańsk, the former Lotos refinery, became part of Orlen with the 2022 merger of the two companies and sits on the Baltic with sea-borne crude, hydrotreating and a coking complex added under the EFRA programme. A shift at either site walks past hydrogen, light hydrocarbons, sour streams and, in the polymer and coke areas, combustible dust. Very few of those walks are short, and none of them pass a charging point.

Sites and group companies

Płock refinery
Crude distillation, conversion and hydrotreating inside the largest refining and petrochemical complex in the country.
Płock petrochemicals
Olefins and downstream polymer production sharing the fence with the refinery.
Basell Orlen Polyolefins
Polyethylene and polypropylene joint venture with LyondellBasell, operating at Płock.
Gdańsk refinery
Coastal refinery, including the coking complex commissioned in the EFRA programme.
Orlen Południe
Biorefining at Trzebinia and base oil and regeneration work at Jedlicze.
Anwil, Włocławek
Chlor-alkali, PVC and nitrogen fertiliser plants owned by the group.

What the classification looks like

Crude and product units
Flammable vapour, mostly gas group IIA, with hydrogen (IIC) around hydrotreaters and reformers.
Sour and sulphur areas
Hydrogen sulphide streams and sulphur recovery, where a toxic hazard sits beside the ignition one.
Olefins and polymer units
Ethylene (IIB), propylene, and polyolefin powder handling that adds Zone 21 dust.
Coking and coke handling
Hot coke and coke dust around the Gdańsk coking complex.
Loading gantries and jetties
Vapour released during filling of road, rail and marine product.
Control rooms and workshops
Outside the zones; where a handset is checked, charged and issued.

What Płock and Gdańsk do to a handset

Classification decides whether a device may be carried at all. These are the conditions that decide whether it is still useful by the end of a turnaround month.

Distances that the site map hides

A large refinery is a town with its own roads, and a unit-to-unit round can mean a vehicle between stops. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to cover a shift rather than the first half of it.

Hydrogen sets the gas group

Hydrotreating and reforming put hydrogen into the area classification. The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so the gas group is not the limit; your instrument engineer checks the temperature class against the streams in each unit.

Coke, powder and Zone 21

Polyolefin powder at the polymer plants and coke dust at Gdańsk are dust risks, and Zone 21 belongs to the same certification programme as the gas marking, so one handset serves both kinds of area.

January on an open pipe rack

IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at wet, cold outdoor rounds. The ambient range will be fixed by the certificate and published with the datasheet.

Photography on a controlled site

Refinery operators commonly restrict photography. Android Enterprise policy lets the camera be disabled or limited by zone from your existing MDM console, rather than leaving it to individual discretion.

Use cases · Orlen

Where an Orlen team would use the IS-04Z1

Turnaround01

Unit shutdowns with contractor surges

Headcount rises several-fold during a planned shutdown. Handsets can be enrolled when a crew arrives, limited to approved applications for the permit period, and wiped and reissued at demobilisation.

Operations02

Unit rounds and defect reports

An operator records a reading, photographs a weeping flange with a coordinate attached and sends it to the maintenance planner without leaving the unit.

Marine and loading03

Gdańsk jetty and loading duty

Loading is where vapour is released on purpose. A handset that can be carried onto the gantry replaces the radio, the camera and the paper loading sheet.

Questions · Orlen

Frequently asked questions

What does the explosion protection document say about phones?

Under Polish workplace rules the employer records its classified zones and the equipment allowed in them in the explosion protection document, the dokument zabezpieczenia przed wybuchem. A new handset type is added by the employer’s competent person once the certificate and safe-use instructions are in hand. SAMS supplies those; the decision stays with Orlen.

Is one handset enough for Płock, Gdańsk and Włocławek?

The design target is the same everywhere: Zone 1 and Zone 21. What differs is each unit’s classification, so check gas group and temperature class area by area. Chlorine and ammonia at Włocławek are toxic hazards that a phone does not replace a personal gas detector for.

Who decides whether a contractor’s phone may enter an Orlen unit?

The site operator, through its permit-to-work rules. A certificate is evidence for that decision, not permission. Ask Orlen’s procurement and HSE teams what they require of portable electronic devices and whether a handset must be registered before a contractor brings it on site.

Does Orlen use this device today?

No. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued. SAMS has no supply agreement, pilot or relationship with Orlen; this page describes what an Orlen evaluation would look at.
