Explosion proof mobile phone for New Zealand, Zone 1 and Zone 21

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe handset for people who cross into classified areas in New Zealand every shift: Taranaki gas-field operators, methanol and fertiliser plant crews, dairy-processing engineers managing milk-powder dust risk, and the HSE and telecoms teams who equip them. It is pre-launch, so what you can have today is the datasheet, the certification schedule and an evaluation unit.

Where a flameproof handset is needed in New Zealand

New Zealand’s classified-area workforce sits mainly in Taranaki’s energy province, with dairy-processing sites spread across the North and South Islands adding a distinct dust-hazard profile.

Operators and contractors such as Methanex, Todd Energy and OMV New Zealand need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Taranaki, Motunui / Waitara Valley and Kapuni. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for New Zealand conditions

New Zealand pairs a conventional Taranaki gas and petrochemical hazard profile with something less common globally — large-scale combustible dust risk from dairy processing. These are the points a New Zealand evaluator presses on, and how the design answers them.

For evaluators in New Zealand, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Milk-powder dust is a real Zone 21 hazard; Maritime humidity and temperate conditions; A single specification for gas and dairy dust; A shift-length battery; Managed like the rest of the fleet.

Milk-powder dust is a real Zone 21 hazard

Dried milk powder is a well-documented combustible dust, and drying towers and storage silos are classified accordingly. The device is designed for Zone 21 as well as Zone 1, covering dairy processing on the same specification as Taranaki gas work.

Maritime humidity and temperate conditions

New Zealand’s climate is temperate and humid rather than desert-hot, which is easier on electronics but still demands proper sealing against condensation and coastal salt air. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified regardless of climate extremity.

A single specification for gas and dairy dust

Operators with both energy and food-processing interests, or contractors working across both sectors, do not need two separate certified devices.

A shift-length battery

Both a Taranaki plant round and a dairy-processing shift run a full working day, and the 4,000 mAh cell is specified for that duration without an in-area recharge point.

Managed like the rest of the fleet

EMM and MDM enrolment pushes the corporate profile and camera policy centrally, useful where dairy-processing sites run strict food-safety and hygiene-photography controls alongside the Ex classification.

Approvals in New Zealand

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

IECEx certification is the technical basis New Zealand shares with Australia under the joint AS/NZS 60079 series. Conformity marking is being pursued alongside launch.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

Conformity in New Zealand runs under the joint Australia/New Zealand standards framework (AS/NZS), administered nationally with WorkSafe New Zealand responsible for workplace hazardous-area enforcement. For hazardous-area equipment the technical evidence behind that conformity is an IECEx Certificate of Conformity, and because this product is a phone it also needs Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) approval. None of the three is finished yet.

Getting past the plant gate is a separate exercise. Methanex, Fonterra and the Taranaki operators each run their own engineering-approval process for equipment entering a classified area, and a foreign manufacturer is normally expected to supply through a New Zealand-registered partner. A device can be fully AS/NZS-conformant and still be unlisted on an operator’s own equipment register, so plan for two timelines rather than one.

Use cases · New Zealand

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in New Zealand includes: Methanol plant operations at Motunui; Milk-powder drying towers nationwide; Field operations in the Taranaki basin; Ammonia and urea production at Kapuni.

Petrochemical01

Methanol plant operations at Motunui

A process operator at Methanex’s methanol plants needs to log readings, photograph equipment and stay in contact with the control room across a Zone 1 gas environment. Four-constellation GNSS and a rugged build suit continuous plant rounds.

Dairy processing02

Milk-powder drying towers nationwide

Dairy processors classify drying towers and powder-handling areas as Zone 21 combustible-dust environments. A device designed for dust as well as gas covers this sector on the same specification used across Taranaki energy sites.

Upstream gas03

Field operations in the Taranaki basin

Wellhead and gathering operations across Taranaki’s gas fields sit inside Zone 1 gas atmospheres. Ex ib IIC T4 intrinsic safety is designed to meet that classification directly.

Fertiliser04

Ammonia and urea production at Kapuni

Ballance Agri-Nutrients’ Kapuni plant combines gas feedstock handling with fertiliser processing. One device specification is designed to cover the site’s classified areas end to end.

How to buy · New Zealand

How to evaluate and buy in New Zealand

The IS-04Z1 launches in Q4 2026. None of these steps needs a purchase order, and they are ordered so that your approvals and our certification run in parallel.

  1. 01

    Send us the area classification

Give us the zone, gas or dust group and temperature class for the areas a device would enter, plus the operator whose approval you work under. That is enough for us to say plainly where certification stands against your requirement.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the full specification and a written list of the certifications in progress with target dates. An HSE officer can start an equipment selection justification with it, and procurement can open a vendor file.

  3. 03

    Join the evaluation programme

Evaluation units will be offered to New Zealand operators and contractors for handling and MDM trials in safe areas, moving to classified-area pilots once the certificate exists.

  4. 04

Supply through a New Zealand or Australian regional partner

AS/NZS conformity is shared with Australia, so supply is planned through a regional partner able to hold the joint documentation and carry spares. Evaluation quantities can be supplied directly while that channel is appointed.

Questions · New Zealand

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in New Zealand?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about New Zealand →
Can we buy an explosion proof mobile phone from SAMS in New Zealand today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and every certification behind it, including IECEx, ATEX and the AS/NZS conformity route, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. What exists today is the datasheet, the certification schedule and a place in the evaluation programme.

Is this really needed for dairy processing, not just oil and gas?

Yes. Dried milk powder is a documented combustible dust, and drying towers and storage areas at dairy plants are classified as hazardous areas under the same Zone system used for gas. The device is designed to cover both.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in New Zealand?

We do not publish one. Until certification completes there is no list price, and pre-launch pricing is available on request against a stated quantity and site.

Does New Zealand use the same standard as Australia?

Yes, largely. New Zealand and Australia share the joint AS/NZS 60079 series for equipment used in explosive atmospheres, so certification work for one market informs the other.

Will Methanex or Fonterra accept it on site?

That decision belongs to each operator and follows the certificates rather than preceding them. The IECEx certificate is the evidence their engineering review is built on.
