Hydrogen needs IIC
Hydrogen has a very low minimum ignition energy and is the most demanding gas group. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Ex ib IIC T4, so one specification covers the reformer, the synthesis loop and any new hydrogen plant.
Ballance Agri-Nutrients is a farmer-owned cooperative that runs New Zealand's only ammonia-urea plant at Kapuni in Taranaki. For the HSE, engineering and shutdown teams there, an explosion proof mobile phone for New Zealand fertiliser work has to cope with natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia on one site, under a gas supply that has repeatedly been in doubt. This page sets out what is classified at Kapuni and what the IS-04Z1 is designed for. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx certification in progress
Kapuni makes ammonia from natural gas and converts it to granular urea, and news reports put it at about a third of the urea New Zealand uses each year. The process starts with reforming, which produces a hydrogen-rich synthesis gas, then ammonia synthesis under pressure, then urea formation and granulation. Natural gas is gas group IIA, hydrogen is IIC, and ammonia is IIA but toxic well below any flammable concentration, so the plant's gas-detection and emergency procedures matter as much as its zone drawings. Granulation and handling of the urea product create dust, and the site's classification decides whether any of that counts as a Zone 21 or 22 area; do not assume. The site is also changing: in February 2026 Ballance reported that its Kapuni Project, with Hiringa Energy, reached financial close, bringing renewable energy and green hydrogen production to the site.
Most of the risks at a fertiliser plant are about what a person does after a release, not only before. The handset has to be safe to carry in a gas atmosphere and useful in an emergency, without being mistaken for a gas detector.

An ammonia release is a toxic event that calls for breathing apparatus and muster. The handset is not a gas detector and does not replace one; its role is to carry the call, a position and a photograph back to the control room.
A plant running on short gas contracts is repeatedly prepared for shutdown and brought back. Each cycle generates permits, isolation checks and leak checks, and an enrolled handset keeps their photographs and times together.
Kapuni is a single large site, so an MDM console can manage every device from one place. Android 16, Android Enterprise and existing MDM tools mean policy is set once; the 4,000 mAh cell is specified to last a shift.
An operator walking from reformer to synthesis loop to urea plant records readings, photographs a leaking flange and calls the control room, all without leaving the classified area.
If supply is interrupted, crews isolate and purge quickly. Photographs of each valve and blind, tied to the permit and a time stamp, support the handover to the restart team.
New renewable and hydrogen work on a live site puts construction contractors next to operating plant. A managed handset limits apps and logs who was where.
We have no relationship with Ballance and this page does not describe its internal process. These are the points any fertiliser plant's engineering and HSE teams will raise with a supplier of equipment for classified areas.
Ballance flagged a possible shutdown of up to four months in August 2025 and later secured short-term gas contracts, the latest reported running to late March 2026. Check its own announcements for the current position.
It raises it. Hydrogen is gas group IIC, so a device must be marked for IIC, as the IS-04Z1 is designed to be, rather than IIA or IIB.
Only if the site's classification says so. Zone 21 is a design target of the IS-04Z1, but the classification dossier decides which areas apply.
No. Awarua makes phosphate products near Invercargill and has a different hazard profile, so this page deals with Kapuni.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for New Zealand. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
