Explosion proof mobile phone for Todd Energy, Taranaki

Todd Energy is the energy arm of the privately held Todd Corporation and owns and operates the Kapuni, McKee and Mangahewa fields in Taranaki. Anyone looking for an explosion proof mobile phone for New Zealand upstream gas work will find most of the wellpads, treatment plants and production stations on this page. It is written for the engineers, HSE staff and field supervisors who decide what a person may carry beyond the production station gate. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Todd Energy's fields and plants in Taranaki

Todd's footprint is compact and inland, unlike the offshore platforms run by its neighbours. Kapuni, near Eltham in South Taranaki, is among New Zealand's oldest commercial gas fields, discovered in 1959, and its gas is processed at the Kapuni gas treatment plant on Palmer Road. Further north, the McKee Mangahewa production station on Otaraoa Road near Tikorangi processes oil and gas from the McKee and Mangahewa wellsites; construction of the McKee station began in 1983 and it opened in 1985. Todd also holds 26 per cent of the offshore Pohokura field, which OMV operates, so Todd staff regularly visit sites that are not Todd's. Wellpads hold several wells close together, and drilling or well intervention campaigns bring rigs and service crews onto them for weeks at a time. The Taranaki Regional Council publishes annual monitoring reports on both Todd stations.

What inland Taranaki gas work asks of an explosion proof mobile phone

Todd's sites are small, dispersed and often lightly staffed, which changes what a handset has to do. The hazards are ordinary for gas: methane is gas group IIA and condensate vapour is similar, so the classification is mostly about where, not what.

Lone workers between wellpads

A field operator may drive between pads and work alone on a wellsite, so reaching the control room matters more than anything else the device does. Four-constellation GNSS puts a position on the record if a call goes unanswered.

A phone that does the paperwork

Wellsite inspections produce readings, photographs and checks. A single handset with a 50 MP camera and Android Enterprise apps replaces a clipboard and a separate camera that would otherwise stay in the vehicle.

Campaign work brings crowds

A drilling or workover campaign puts rig crews, service companies and inspectors on one pad. Enrolment into a managed console lets Todd decide which apps, contacts and permits a contractor's handset carries.

Rain, mud and gravel

Taranaki rainfall and unsealed pad surfaces are hard on a handset. IP68 sealing and rugged build are chosen for that, with a 4,000 mAh battery specified to last a shift.

Use cases · Todd Energy

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Wellsites01

Wellpad inspection rounds

An operator checks wellheads, separators and flowlines on a pad, photographs a weeping fitting and records readings. The handset is designed to do it in Zone 1 without the stop at the vehicle to switch devices.

Processing02

Treatment plant maintenance

At Kapuni and McKee Mangahewa, planned shutdowns put contractors into compression and treatment areas together. Permits, isolations and photographs sit on one device that the site can wipe or reassign afterwards.

Joint operations03

Pohokura visits

Todd's staff visiting OMV's Pohokura station follow OMV's rules, not Todd's. A handset whose documentation can be shown to both operators makes the introduction easier, though each decides for itself.

Procurement · Todd Energy

Buying an explosion proof mobile phone for a New Zealand gas operator

We have no relationship with Todd Energy and cannot describe its supplier or contractor registration process. Ask its procurement and HSE teams what a supplier of equipment for classified areas must supply before an evaluation.

Certificate evidence
An IECEx Certificate of Conformity for Zone 1 gas, IIC and T4; none has been issued and certification is in progress.
Classification dossier
Each production station and wellpad carries its own hazardous-area classification, which decides where the handset may go.
Regional rules
The Taranaki Regional Council monitors consents, but equipment approval is the operator's own process.
Local support
A New Zealand partner is the usual route for service, spares and radio compliance for a foreign manufacturer.
Questions · Todd Energy

Frequently asked questions

Is Todd Energy the same as OMV's operations?

No. Todd operates its own onshore fields and plants and is a 26 per cent partner in Pohokura, which OMV operates. Each has its own approval route.

Does a wellpad need a different handset from a processing plant?

The design target is Zone 1 across both. The difference is the classification of each area, which the operator's dossier states and the certificate has to cover.

Is Kapuni gas the same as offshore gas?

Not exactly. Each field's gas composition differs, so confirm gas group and temperature class against the site's dossier rather than assuming a basin-wide figure.

How does a drilling campaign change equipment needs?

It adds people and short-term permits more than new hazards. The practical need is quick enrolment of contractor handsets and their removal afterwards.
