Explosion proof mobile phone for dairy processing in New Zealand

New Zealand's dairy processing sector is the country's largest source of combustible dust, so an explosion proof mobile phone for New Zealand dairy plants is specified for powder rather than gas. Fonterra dominates, but Open Country Dairy, Synlait, Tatua and Westland Milk Products also run drying plants. This page is for the engineering, HSE and food-safety teams who decide what may be carried onto a drying floor. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Who processes milk powder in New Zealand

Fonterra is the largest processor and the world's largest dairy exporter; our page on an explosion proof phone for Fonterra sites covers Edendale, Te Rapa, Hautapu, Clandeboye, Whareroa and Pahiatua. Others work on a smaller scale. Open Country Dairy lists manufacturing sites at Waharoa, Awarua in Southland and Horotiu, the last opened in 2019 for whole milk powder. Synlait is headquartered at Dunsandel in Canterbury and bought land at Pōkeno in North Waikato for a second nutritional powder site. Tatua is a cooperative at Morrinsville, and Westland Milk Products has its main plant in Hokitika and has been owned by Yili since 2019. Each differs in products and layout, so there is no sector-wide dryer drawing. What they share is a spray dryer, powder handling and a hygiene regime that most other classified industries do not have.

Powder, washdown and seasons: what dairy asks of an explosion proof mobile phone

Milk powder is an organic dust with its own ignition and explosibility behaviour, and dairy floors run hygiene rules that gas plants never meet. The two together are what make this a sector of its own.

OSAndroid 16

Organic dust, not mineral dust

Milk powder behaves differently from coal or mineral dust, and the classification study states which areas are Zone 21 or 22. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 21 as well as Zone 1, but the certificate will state the exact dust scope.

WorkSafe has written about this

WorkSafe New Zealand publishes an approved code of practice on fire and explosion in dairy spray-drying plant. It covers design, operation and maintenance and predates the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, so ask each site how it applies the guidance now.

Hygiene rules shape what you can carry

Food-safety zones control cameras, loose items and cleaning methods. MDM policy on Android 16 can switch the 50 MP camera off by zone, and IP68 sealing helps with washdown, but each site's food-safety team decides.

The season sets the calendar

Milk supply peaks in spring and drops in winter, so evaluation and rollout belong in the quiet months. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a shift, since there is no charging point in a dust area.

Use cases · Dairy processing

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Dryer and packing rounds

Operators check for deposits and seal condition around dryers and packing lines, logging readings and photographing defects without leaving the area.

Maintenance02

Winter clean-down and shutdown

Off-season maintenance puts contractors on silos, conveyors and filters at once. Permits and photographs on one enrolled handset keep a busy week traceable.

Multi-site03

Fleet management across sites

Processors with several plants want one enrolment process. Android Enterprise and existing MDM consoles let a policy be written once and applied everywhere.

Procurement · Dairy processing

Buying an explosion proof mobile phone for a New Zealand dairy plant

We have no relationship with any processor named here and cannot describe their approval processes. Ask each company's engineering, HSE and food-safety teams what a supplier must provide before equipment enters a classified or hygiene-controlled area.

Certificate evidence
IECEx Certificate of Conformity including the dust scope; none has been issued and certification is in progress.
Site classification
The hazardous-area dossier states Zone 21 or 22 and the surface-temperature limit; the certificate has to cover it.
Food safety
Hygiene, camera and cleaning rules are a separate approval from Ex certification.
Local route
A New Zealand partner is the usual route for service, spares and radio compliance.
Questions · Dairy processing

Frequently asked questions

Is milk powder dust the same hazard as grain or coal dust?

All are combustible dusts, but explosibility and ignition behaviour differ. The classification study for each site is what counts, and the certificate will state the dust scope.

Do smaller processors need the same device as Fonterra?

The hazard is similar, but classification and approval are each company's own. A single device specification can serve all, though each decides for itself.

Does a food-grade requirement apply to a phone?

Food-contact rules and Ex certification are separate questions. Ask each plant's food-safety team about carrying and cleaning a handset on a production floor.

Does it work through a quiet winter and a peak spring?

The specification is the same all year. Seasonality changes how many devices are in use and how heavily, not the certification requirement.
