Hydrogen sets the bar at IIC
Hydrogen is the most demanding gas group, and both methanol and ammonia plants make or use it. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Ex ib IIC T4, so a single device covers methanol, ammonia and hydrogen areas.
New Zealand's chemicals and fertiliser sector is small, tied to natural gas and increasingly uncertain, which is why an explosion proof mobile phone for New Zealand chemical plants needs to be specified against real sites rather than a generic industry label. This page covers where Zone 1 conditions actually arise in methanol, ammonia-urea and superphosphate production, and where they do not. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx programme in progress
Two plants account for most of the classified-area work. Methanex's Motunui methanol plant in Taranaki turns natural gas into methanol; the company announced on 1 September 2026 that it will idle it in the first quarter of 2027, and the Methanex page covers that in detail. Ballance Agri-Nutrients' Kapuni plant makes ammonia and urea from natural gas, and our page on an explosion proof phone for Ballance at Kapuni sets out its sites and hazards. Superphosphate is different. Ballance's Awarua plant near Invercargill and Ravensdown's works, which have included Hornby in Christchurch and Napier, make phosphate fertiliser from imported rock and sulphuric acid. Their main hazards are corrosive and toxic, not explosive, so far less of those sites are Zone 1 or Zone 21 than a gas plant. That is worth saying plainly: specify a handset against the classification, not the sector.
Chemical plants do not share a single hazard. The questions that decide a handset's fitness are the gas group, the toxicity of what leaks, and whether the plant is running, stopping or mothballed.

At an ammonia plant the first response to a leak is evacuation and breathing apparatus, not ignition control. The handset carries calls and positions; it is not a gas detector.
Both major plants have faced gas shortages. Each shutdown and restart brings permits, isolations and purge checks, and an enrolled handset keeps their photographs and times in one record.
Coastal and acid-plant environments are hard on seals. IP68 sealing and rugged build suit them, with a 4,000 mAh battery specified for a shift.
An operator on the single running train logs readings, photographs a leak and calls the control room from one device, until the planned idling.
Operators move from reformer to synthesis loop to urea plant, with natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia on one site. The handset reports position and carries permit photographs.
New hydrogen work and short-notice shutdowns bring contractors into live plant. A managed handset limits apps and records who attended.
We have no relationship with any operator on this page and cannot describe their approval processes. Ask each plant's engineering and HSE teams what a supplier must provide before a device enters a classified area.
Often not across the whole site. Their main hazards are corrosive and toxic, so only areas the site has classified need Ex equipment. Check the dossier.
Plant status changes. Methanex has announced indefinite idling for Q1 2027, and Ballance has reported short-term gas contracts, so check each company's latest statements.
Hydrogen in synthesis gas is IIC. A device marked only for IIA or IIB could not be used in those areas, so IIC is the sensible design target.
Yes. The process hazards and gas groups differ, and so do toxicity concerns. The oil and gas page covers upstream and terminals.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for New Zealand. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
