Explosion proof mobile phone for Fonterra dairy sites

Fonterra is a farmer-owned cooperative and the world's largest dairy exporter, so anyone specifying an explosion proof mobile phone for New Zealand dairy sites ends up asking about it. Its manufacturing sites run from Edendale in Southland to Hautapu in the Waikato, and the common thread is combustible milk-powder dust in spray dryers, conveyors, silos and bagging halls. This page is for the engineering, HSE and telecoms people who decide what may be carried into those areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where Fonterra's dust and gas areas sit

Fonterra does not run one plant; it runs a chain of them, and they differ. Edendale in Southland is described by Fonterra as the largest raw-milk processing site in the world, and its ED4 dryer, commissioned in September 2009, was billed as the biggest milk dryer ever built. Te Rapa and Hautapu in the Waikato, Pahiatua in the Tararua district, Clandeboye in South Canterbury and Whareroa at Hawera in South Taranaki each carry their own mix of powders and other products. In every case the classified areas follow the powder: the dryer and fluid bed, the cyclones and bag filters, the conveyors and sifters, the silos and the bagging or bulk-bin halls, plus dust layers on ledges and beams that housekeeping has to keep down. Boiler houses and refrigeration plant add gas or ammonia questions, so a site walk-down matters more than a company-wide assumption.

Operator and sites

Fonterra Co-operative Group
Farmer-owned; engineering and safety standards are set centrally and applied through each site.
Edendale, Southland
Fonterra's largest manufacturing site; the ED4 dryer dates from 2009.
Te Rapa and Hautapu
Waikato sites near Hamilton and Cambridge.
Clandeboye, South Canterbury
A major Canterbury processing site.
Whareroa, Hawera
The South Taranaki site, in gas-field country.
Pahiatua, Tararua
A North Island site in the Tararua district.

Classified areas and controls

Spray dryers and fluid beds
Combustible milk-powder dust; temperature and deposit control are the core safeguards.
Cyclones and bag filters
Dust collection, where fine powder is concentrated and has to be cleared safely.
Conveying and sifting
Transfer points where a dust cloud can form.
Silos, bagging and bulk bins
Storage and packing areas with dust in the air during filling.
Boiler houses and fuel stores
Gas, and at sites with solid-fuel boilers, fuel dust; confirm site by site.
WorkSafe guidance
An approved code of practice on fire and explosion in dairy spray-drying plant exists; it predates the 2015 Act.

What a dairy factory does to an explosion proof mobile phone

A dairy factory is nothing like a desert refinery: warm and humid in the dryer hall, cold in a Southland winter, and washed down to food-safety standards every day. Those conditions, as much as the Zone 21 label, decide whether a handset lasts a season.

Washdown and sanitiser, not just dust

Production areas are cleaned with water, detergents and sanitiser. IP68 sealing is the baseline for that, but which cleaning method is allowed for a handset is a question for the site's food-safety team, not an assumption.

Warm dryer halls and cold stores in one shift

An operator can move from a warm dryer floor to a chilled store and out into a winter yard within the hour. IP68 sealing with rugged build is the design response to that cycle.

A season that peaks in spring

Milk supply peaks in spring and drops in winter. Evaluation and enrolment belong in the winter low, so the fleet is trusted before the dryers run flat out. The 4,000 mAh cell is specified for a shift, because there is no charging point inside a dust area.

Cameras under hygiene rules

Food factories restrict photography and loose items on the production floor. The 50 MP camera is useful for logging a deposit or a damaged seal, and MDM policy on Android 16 can switch it off by zone or role.

Use cases · Fonterra

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Operations01

Dryer hall rounds

An operator checking for deposit build-up and seal condition around a dryer has to log readings, photograph a defect and reach the control room. One handset replaces a radio, a camera and a clipboard that would otherwise be signed out at the gate.

Maintenance02

Winter shutdown and clean-down

Off-season maintenance brings contractors onto silos, conveyors and filters at once. A permit-to-work, a site map and a fault photograph on one enrolled device keeps a crowded week traceable.

Contractors03

Hot work around powder plant

Hot work near dust-handling plant is among the highest-risk jobs on a dairy site. The handset is designed to carry the permit and the gas or dust checks, and can be locked to approved apps.

Procurement · Fonterra

Buying an explosion proof mobile phone for a New Zealand dairy site

We have no relationship with Fonterra and this page does not describe its internal process. It lists what the engineering and HSE teams of any large New Zealand food manufacturer will want to see before a device enters a classified area.

Certificate evidence
An IECEx Certificate of Conformity covering the dust scope; certification is in progress ahead of Q4 2026 and none has been issued.
Site classification
The site's own hazardous-area classification decides Zone 21 or 22 and the surface-temperature limit; the certificate has to cover it.
Hygiene rules
The food-safety team decides wash-down, camera and loose-item rules for production floors.
Ownership check
Fonterra's own FAQ put three consumer sites (Takanini, Eltham, Palmerston North) in scope of its sale to Lactalis; confirm who owns a site before sending evidence.
Questions · Fonterra

Frequently asked questions

Can the handset go inside a dryer or silo?

No. The inside of process equipment can be Zone 20, which is beyond the Zone 1 and Zone 21 design target of the IS-04Z1. It is meant for people working around the plant, not inside it.

Will cameras be allowed on a Fonterra production floor?

That is Fonterra's call, site by site. The camera can be controlled centrally through MDM, so a strict site does not need a different device.

When should an evaluation start, given the milk season?

Winter is the practical window, when plants are quiet and maintenance is under way. Starting then gives the fleet a full off-season of trials before the spring peak.

Who inside Fonterra decides on a new device?

Expect site engineering, HSE and telecoms or IT security to be involved, with group procurement behind them.
