Crackers, polymers and the power and water that serve them
At Shuaiba, EQUATE operates ethylene glycol and polyethylene production and Kuwait Olefins Company runs the second cracker, with Petrochemical Industries Company as a shareholder. Further south, Az-Zour North is described as Kuwait's first independent water and power project, with 1,500 MW of gas-fired combined-cycle generation and a desalination plant of up to 107 million gallons a day, commissioned in 2016 and purchased by the Ministry of Electricity and Water. A phase two and three scheme with ACWA Power was reported as signed in 2025. Sabiya is another gas-fired power and desalination site north of Kuwait Bay. The two halves of the sector are run differently. Petrochemical plants run continuously with shutdowns planned in blocks, while power and water stations work to summer peak demand, so outage windows are usually set around the hottest months. Both rely on contractor crews for maintenance, and both have operators who spend most of a shift on foot between buildings that are not classified and pockets that are. Plant rounds between gas and dust areas
An engineer walking from a cracker to a polymer hall crosses classifications without leaving the plant. A handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 means the permit does not need to specify which device goes into which building.

Gas turbine and fuel skid checks
An operator takes readings, photographs a defect and calls control from the same device. Photographs of a regulator or a seal, tied to a GNSS position and time, make the work request clearer than a verbal description over the radio.

Desalination plant maintenance
Contractor crews on maintenance windows receive enrolled handsets locked to approved applications. Because most of the plant is not classified but a few pockets are, one intrinsically safe handset removes the need to plan each task around where a device is permitted.
