Explosion proof mobile phone for KIPIC's Al-Zour complex

KIPIC was formed in 2016 to run the Al-Zour refinery, the LNG import terminal and a planned petrochemical complex on one site south of Kuwait City. This page is for the people who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Kuwait's newest, largest and most integrated site. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Al-Zour: a refinery, an LNG terminal and a petrochemical site on one coast

Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company was set up by Kuwait Petroleum Corporation in 2016 to build and run Al-Zour, about 90 kilometres south of Kuwait City. The refinery is rated at 615,000 barrels a day and was reported fully commissioned in early 2024. The LNG import terminal, built by a consortium led by Hyundai, took its first cargo in 2021 and now has eight 225,000 cubic metre tanks and two marine jetties. A petrochemical complex of gasoline, aromatics and olefins units is still planned, with trade press describing it as awaiting a final investment decision. KIPIC's merger into KNPC was reported complete on 1 July 2026. Because Al-Zour is new, its classification drawings and equipment records are more current than the old plants, and it is a site where contractor commissioning crews are still a familiar presence.

Companies and contractors at Al-Zour

KIPIC, now part of KNPC
Built and ran Al-Zour before the merger moved it under KNPC.
Kuwait Petroleum Corporation
Parent that created KIPIC and set the downstream strategy.
Hyundai-led consortium
Built the LNG import terminal on an engineering, procurement and construction basis.
Kuwait Oil Tanker Company
State tanker operator, relevant to crude and product movements.
Petrofac
International contractor on Kuwaiti gas and refinery scopes.
HEISCO
Kuwaiti contractor on refinery and marine scopes.

Classified units at the complex

Refinery process units
Distillation, conversion and hydrotreating with hydrogen and hot hydrocarbon.
LNG tanks and send-out
Eight storage tanks with regasification, handling methane at cryogenic temperature.
Marine jetties
Two LNG jetties and the product loading berths, outdoors and exposed to salt.
Sulphur and utilities
Sour gas, sulphur handling and fuel gas systems.
Tank farm
Crude and product tankage with classified bunds.
Petrochemical development area
Planned units for aromatics and olefins, so construction activity rather than operation.

What a new integrated site expects of a Zone 1 mobile phone

Al-Zour has little history of old equipment to work around. It has scale, a long coastline and a mix of refining and LNG duty, and those are what shape the questions about a handset.

Methane and hydrogen on the same shift

An LNG round is mostly group IIA gas, while the refinery's hydroprocessing is group IIC. A design target of Zone 1, gas group IIC and temperature class T4 covers the stricter case, so a single marking string can be checked against both sets of drawings.

A very long site

Between the refinery, the tank farm and the jetties an operator may cover several kilometres on a round with no charging point inside a classified area. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a shift, and four-constellation GNSS gives a position that a site plan can be tied to.

Commissioning and construction crews

Where units are still being handed over or built, contractor crews rotate quickly. Managed enrolment lets the owner issue, restrict and recover devices for each contract instead of tracking loose handsets.

Salt air on the waterfront

The jetties and the sea-facing units sit in salt and humidity on top of Gulf heat. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the figures a marine terminal's engineers will ask about, with certification still in progress.

Use cases · Al-Zour

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

LNG01

Tank farm and send-out rounds

An operator logs readings from the tank area, photographs a defect and calls the control room from inside the classified boundary. One handset replaces a radio, a camera and a paper sheet.

Refining02

Process unit handovers

As units move from construction to operation, punch-list items and as-built checks multiply. Photographs tied to a GNSS position let the handover team agree where the problem actually is.

Marine03

Jetty operations

Ship-to-shore coordination is done outdoors in glare and salt. NFC tag reads at the arm and photographs of the connection can be written to the terminal's records from a device designed for Zone 1.

What the Al-Zour teams will ask for

Approval at Al-Zour after the merger

The site's approval route is now KNPC's, but we have not verified any programme names, so this is a checklist of what to request from the operator.

Entity name
Check which company name and vendor registry now apply to Al-Zour purchasing.
Certificate basis
IECEx Certificate of Conformity once issued, with marking string and temperature class.
National conformity
KUCAS Technical Evaluation and Inspection Reports, plus CITRA radio type approval.
Site access
Ask the operator's HSE and telecoms teams for the handset rules for contractors, including photography and enrolment.
Questions · KIPIC

Frequently asked questions

Is KIPIC still a separate company?

Press reports based on the Oil Minister's statement say the merger into KNPC was completed on 1 July 2026. We have not seen KIPIC's or KNPC's own filing, so ask the operator which entity name to use.

Is the IS-04Z1 approved for Al-Zour?

No. It is pre-launch, with IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification in progress, and no certificate has been issued. Nothing enters a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

Does an LNG terminal need group IIC equipment?

Methane is group IIA, so group IIC is not strictly needed there. The refinery's hydrogen units are why the IS-04Z1 is designed to IIC, and IIC equipment is suitable for IIA and IIB atmospheres.

Can we evaluate a unit before the certificate?

Yes, in a safe area. Evaluation units are for handling, battery and enrolment trials only.
