Zone 1 where the area calls for it, Zone 2 elsewhere
Not every upstream area is Zone 1. A device designed for Zone 1 is also suitable for the lower-risk zones, and area classification drawings from each operator are the authority.
Kuwait's upstream sector produces oil from Greater Burgan, sour gas from the northern Jurassic fields and heavy oil from the Partitioned Zone. This page is for the operators and contractors across that sector who need an explosion proof mobile phone for Kuwait oil and gas work, and shows where the specification differs between them. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx and KUCAS programme in progress
Kuwait Oil Company produces onshore from the south, where Greater Burgan sits, to the north, where the Jurassic gas programme covers Sabriya, Umm Niqa, Raudhatain, Bahra and Dhabi. Kuwait Gulf Oil Company handles the Kuwaiti side of the Partitioned Zone at Wafra and Khafji, shared with Saudi Arabia. Production flows to the coast, where Kuwait National Petroleum Company and the tanker fleet take over. The hazard picture runs from near-sweet associated gas in the south, through sour crude at newer Burgan gathering centres, to hydrogen-sulphide-bearing gas in the north. A single supplier specification has to survive all three. Work is organised around long rotations at remote sites, drilling and workover campaigns run by contractors, and gathering centre operators on shift rounds. For company-level detail see the pages on the explosion proof phone for Kuwait Oil Company and for Ahmadi, and for the downstream hand-off, the KNPC and refining pages.
The same handset has to cope with desert, sour gas and the logistics of crews dispersed across the country.

Hydrogen sulphide is group IIB, so a group IIC design target covers it, but a personal detector remains the safety device. Bluetooth pairing keeps both on the crew's belt without dropping a hand.
Long distances and unmanned wellpads make a 4,000 mAh battery and GNSS fixes the practical specification. IP68 sealing is what keeps shamal dust out.
Many contractors serve several operators. Enrolment into existing MDM consoles lets a contractor carry one managed handset template across clients.
A fault on a remote flowline sends a crew to a position better given by coordinates than directions. Navigation, photographs and a call to the planner run from one handset, so the crew does not return to the vehicle to use a separate unit.
Rounds at a Jurassic facility keep detection on and hands free, with the handset recording readings and reporting a leak. A small crew on a remote facility has no second person to run back for a camera, which is the point of carrying one device.
New gathering centres mean permit-driven contractor crews. Enrolled handsets are issued per contract and recovered when it ends, with the camera policy set by the owner's console rather than by each crew.
We have not verified individual operator registration programmes, so these are questions to put to each operator's procurement and HSE teams.
No. It is pre-launch and no certificate has been issued; IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 are in progress.
Hydrogen sulphide is group IIB, and the design target is group IIC, which covers it. The handset is never a substitute for a gas detector.
Zone 1 equipment can normally be used in Zone 2, but check the classification drawings and the operator's own rules.
Possibly. Kuwait Gulf Oil Company runs the Kuwaiti side jointly with Saudi Arabia, so ask which party's procurement and HSE rules govern equipment on a given site before assuming Kuwaiti vendor registration is the only route.
See the pages for Kuwait Oil Company and Ahmadi, and for the downstream side KNPC and refining.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Kuwait. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
