An explosion proof mobile phone for Pertamina's refineries in Indonesia has to suit five very different sites: Cilacap in Central Java, Balikpapan in East Kalimantan, Dumai in Riau, Balongan in West Java and Plaju in South Sumatra. Pertamina's refining business is run through its subholding Kilang Pertamina Internasional, and its refineries were built in different decades for different crudes. Plaju, beside the Musi river at Palembang, is the oldest. Cilacap, on the south coast of Central Java, is the largest and carries a lube oil complex. Balikpapan sits on its bay in East Kalimantan with a marine terminal and an upgrade project alongside the running plant. Dumai on the Strait of Malacca handles product and crude through busy jetties, and Balongan on the Java north coast pairs refining with petrochemical units. What they share is a process area where hydrocarbon vapour, hydrogen and in places sour gas can be present, and a tank farm and jetty where the classified area stretches a long way from any safe room.
Area classification decides whether a device may enter at all. The environment around the refineries then decides whether it is still working in month six. Five conditions come up whenever refinery teams describe their rounds.
Cilacap, Balikpapan and Dumai sit by the sea in a hot, wet climate, and Plaju is hot and humid inland. Condensation, salt and washdown water are routine. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design answer, with the ambient range fixed by the certificate when it is issued.
Hydrotreaters and reformers carry hydrogen-rich gas, so a refinery handset target should be gas group IIC rather than the IIA that crude and naphtha alone would suggest. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the certificate is the document your engineers should check it against.
A distillation column, a furnace bay and a pipe rack are an unfriendly place for cellular coverage. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC connect to plant systems where mobile signal is weak, and push-to-talk runs on the same handset as the camera.
A major turnaround brings contractors in many times over the operating headcount. A phone that can be enrolled in an existing Android Enterprise or MDM console, and wiped when the contract ends, matters more than the handset specification.
Refinery sites control photography, so the camera must be something the operator can restrict rather than something that is simply absent. The 50 MP camera can be governed through the managed console, while a defect on a heater tube or a flange still gets a legible photograph.
Refinery work divides into the operating shift, which walks routes and records readings, and the planned shutdown, when a unit is handed over to inspection, mechanical and instrument crews. Both put people into classified areas for long periods. For supplier approval, Pertamina runs its own procurement and HSE processes on top of national requirements. The certificate evidence a K3 department would expect is IECEx or ATEX, with Indonesian type approval and local content rules handled separately. We have not seen a published equipment list for handsets, so the sensible step is to ask Pertamina's procurement and HSE teams which process applies to a given site.
An outside operator records gauge readings, photographs a leaking seal and calls the board operator from the unit itself, instead of walking to a safe-area phone. Four-constellation GNSS puts the fault on the plant map.
Inspectors tag findings against equipment numbers, photograph them in place and raise follow-up work from the same handset. Because the crew changes at every shutdown, enrolment and removal from the console have to be quick.
Tank gaugers and jetty staff work in the open on long routes with no charging point. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift, and the sealed body is designed for rain and splash.
Large operators in Indonesia normally do, and Pertamina has its own procurement and HSE processes. The IECEx or ATEX certificate is the technical evidence, not the end of the process. Ask the site's procurement and HSE teams what registration and equipment review applies.
That is the operator's choice, not ours. A refinery with a major shutdown planned, or with a construction project alongside the live plant, tends to have the clearest need, because contractor numbers and communication demands peak at those times.
IIA covers many crude and naphtha streams, but hydrogen units are IIC. A single handset rated for IIC avoids issuing different devices by unit, which is the reason the IS-04Z1 marking target is IIC.
