An explosion proof mobile phone for Pertamina Hulu Rokan in Indonesia has to work across the Rokan block in Riau, where Duri and Minas are the best-known fields and the working area is a spread of gathering stations, wells and pipelines rather than one fenced plant. The Rokan block is oilfield country rather than a single site. Minas, discovered in the 1940s, produces light crude, while Duri is a heavy oil field developed with one of the largest steamflood operations anywhere, where steam is injected to thin the oil so that it flows. Between them sit other fields and many gathering stations. Crude is moved by pipeline towards the Dumai area on the Strait of Malacca. Steam generation, cogeneration and water treatment support the heavy oil operation, and associated gas, produced water and heated crude tanks all create gas hazards at the facilities. The field is spread over a large area of Riau, much of it plantation and forest, so a technician's day involves long drives between classified areas, with the nearest safe-area charging point at the camp or district office.
Rokan combines a hot, wet equatorial climate with distance and heavy contractor traffic. Four conditions matter most.
Steam lines and heated crude push surface temperatures up around Duri. Temperature class matters here: the IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the certificate states what that means for ambient range and surface temperature.
Wet season operations mean mud, standing water and a steady risk of a handset dropping from a truck step. IP68 sealing and rugged build are designed for that environment, which is the main reason to carry a sealed handset rather than a phone in a pouch.
A well route can take hours by road, and a coordinate is the most reliable way to report a fault in plantation country. Four-constellation GNSS records one, and the 50 MP camera attaches a photograph that is legible without the supervisor visiting.

Pertamina Hulu Rokan is a Pertamina subsidiary, so it works within the group's procurement and HSE frameworks, and as an upstream operator it also reports to Indonesia's upstream regulator. The usual evidence for an electrical device in a classified area is an IECEx or ATEX certificate, with Indonesian type approval and local content rules handled separately. We do not know the details of any Rokan-specific equipment list, so the right route is to ask the operator's procurement and HSE teams what a supplier must provide.

Gas, overwhelmingly. Hydrocarbon vapour and associated gas drive classification at flowstations, tanks and wells. Zone 21 matters little in the field itself, and the dual Zone 1 and Zone 21 design is relevant when the same staff also visit coal or powder handling elsewhere.
