What is classified in the Cilegon cracker complex
Chandra Asri operates a naphtha cracker at Cilegon that turns naphtha into ethylene, propylene and other olefins, and downstream units turn those into polyethylene, polypropylene, styrene monomer and butadiene. The site is at the western end of Java, near the Sunda Strait, in an industrial zone that also holds steel and chemical plants. A cracker has furnaces, quench and compression, and cold separation, with hydrogen-rich and ethylene-rich gas in many lines. Downstream, polymer units move powder and pellets through silos and bagging, which is why dust classification sits next to gas classification. The result is a site where one operator may pass from a Zone 1 gas area to a Zone 21 powder area in a single walk.

Powder as well as gas
Polyolefin powder and pellets create dust hazards in the polymer units. The Zone 21 design target is relevant here, and one handset replaces a gas device and a dust device.
Furnace heat and surface temperatures
Cracker furnace areas are hot, and temperature class is part of the classification. The certificate is the document your instrument engineer checks, not the marketing line.
Humid coastal air
Cilegon is on the Sunda Strait coast. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design answer to humidity, rain and salt air.
Turnaround and expansion crews
A cracker shutdown or construction project brings large contractor numbers into a live complex. Enrolment through an existing MDM console lets the operator keep control of who has a handset and what it can do.

A cracker runs continuously for long periods and then stops for a planned turnaround, when inspection, mechanical and instrument crews work through the plant against a tight programme. In between, operator rounds cover furnaces, compressors, tank areas and polymer lines. Chandra Asri has its own HSE and procurement processes, which we have not seen published, so we have not named a programme. The usual starting evidence is an IECEx or ATEX certificate, with Indonesian type approval handled separately. Ask the site's procurement and HSE teams what a supplier must submit.

Operators walk through hot, noisy areas recording readings and photographing leaks or hot spots. A handset with camera, torch and voice replaces three items carried separately.

Silo and bagging area inspection
Powder handling areas need a device designed for dust as well as gas, so the same handset can be used in the polymer lines as in the cracker.
Turnaround03
Shutdown inspection and punch lists
Inspectors raise findings against equipment tags, photograph them and update the planner, then pass the device through the console to the next crew.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a cracker need both Zone 1 and Zone 21?
Because the gas side and the powder side sit on one complex. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust, so a polymer operator and a cracker operator can carry the same model.
Is IIB enough for a cracker?
Ethylene is IIB, but hydrogen is IIC. A handset marked IIC covers both. The marking target of the IS-04Z1 is IIC.
