Distance means self-sufficiency
Papua Barat is a long supply line from Java, so an evaluation has to cover spares, repair route and the lead time for a replacement. A sealed, drop-tested body reduces the number of units that fail in the first place.
An explosion proof mobile phone for bp Berau's Tangguh LNG operation in Indonesia has to suit one of the country's most remote industrial sites: an onshore plant and jetty at Teluk Bintuni in Papua Barat, fed by offshore platforms in Bintuni Bay. This page is for the HSE, operations and telecoms teams who decide what is carried into the classified areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · certification programme in progress
bp Berau is the operator of the Tangguh production sharing contract, and the Tangguh facility turns offshore gas from Bintuni Bay into LNG for export and domestic supply. Gas is produced from offshore platforms and piped to the onshore plant, where it is treated, liquefied in three trains and stored in tanks until ships load at the jetty. The hazard is overwhelmingly gas: methane, hydrocarbon refrigerants, condensate and the treatment chemicals on the acid gas removal side. Dust is not the main story here, which is why the page on LNG and gas processing in Indonesia treats Bontang and Tangguh together. What makes Tangguh unusual is its location. Resupply, spare units and specialist help arrive by sea or air, so a handset that fails is not replaced the same afternoon.
Tangguh puts a heavy gas plant in a tropical rainforest and sea environment, a long way from a service centre. These are the conditions that matter to a handset.

Heavy rain, humidity and salt are constant at a coastal plant and on a jetty. IP68 sealing is the design answer to water, and the certificate sets the ambient range the handset is allowed to work in.
Hydrocarbon refrigerants and light gases can fall in different gas groups. A handset marked for IIC avoids having to issue different devices by unit. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.
A train shutdown brings contractors flown in for the duration. The device is managed from existing MDM consoles, so enrolment at arrival and removal at departure can be handled by the operator's own team.
A liquefaction complex with jetty, tanks and utility areas covers a large footprint. Four-constellation GNSS lets inspectors log position, and the 50 MP camera records the condition in the same step.
Tangguh runs as a rotation site: people work blocks of days on site and fly out. Planned work on a train brings extra contractors, and offshore trips are by boat or helicopter. An international operator group typically keeps its own engineering standards for electrical equipment in hazardous areas, in addition to the Indonesian regime. We do not know which standards govern handsets at Tangguh, so we have not named any. Ask bp Berau's engineering, HSE and procurement teams what evidence they need. IECEx documentation is the usual starting point, with Indonesian type approval handled separately.
Operators move between liquefaction trains, utilities and storage on long routes. A single handset carries readings, photographs, a torch and push-to-talk, replacing three items.
During a planned shutdown, inspectors raise findings against tag numbers, photograph them in place and send them for planning without leaving the work front.
Jetty crews work outdoors in rain and spray around loading arms. A sealed handset with voice and camera supports inspection without a safe-area stop between each task.
Mainly gas. The Zone 21 capability of the IS-04Z1 is useful if the same people also visit dust-handling facilities elsewhere, but at an LNG plant the classified areas are driven by gas.
A device carrying an Ex certificate should not be opened by a general workshop, because that would invalidate it. The service route and spares holding for remote sites should be agreed before any purchase.
The handset interface runs in English or Bahasa Indonesia. Local arrangements for training and manuals are for the operator and its distributor to agree.
See the page on explosion proof phones for LNG and gas processing in Indonesia, which also covers Bontang and the other gas hubs.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Indonesia. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
