Indonesia's upstream sits mostly under production sharing contracts supervised by SKK Migas, with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources setting policy. Pertamina and its subsidiaries are the largest operator group: Pertamina Hulu Rokan in Riau, Pertamina Hulu Mahakam in East Kalimantan, and refineries under Kilang Pertamina Internasional. ExxonMobil Cepu operates the Banyu Urip field in East Java, bp Berau operates Tangguh, and Eni operates gas fields in the Kutei Basin offshore East Kalimantan. Medco Energi has interests in South Sumatra and the South Natuna Sea. The hazard types are similar across all of these, but the logistics and operating environments differ: heavy oil in Riau, offshore platforms in the Natuna Sea and a processing facility in a forest in Papua Barat.

Fields at different stages of life
Mature fields such as Minas and Mahakam have ageing equipment and many small facilities, while newer developments have fewer, larger ones. The routes differ, but the need to record, photograph and report from inside the area is the same.

A device with a portable Ex certificate travels with the person, while enrolment stays with the operator's console. Is this device certified for Indonesian oil and gas today?
No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. Teams can review documentation and request an evaluation unit.
Do Indonesian operators accept IECEx?
Indonesian standards for explosive atmospheres follow the IEC 60079 series, so IECEx is the natural technical evidence. Each operator decides what else it requires.
