Where gas processing and LNG are classified in Indonesia
Indonesia has been exporting LNG since the 1970s, and the legacy shows in its plants. Bontang, operated by PT Badak NGL, has liquefaction trains lettered A to H built up over decades. Tangguh, operated by bp Berau, is the newer plant, with three trains. Donggi-Senoro in Central Sulawesi liquefies gas for export, and Arun in Aceh is now a receiving facility rather than an export plant. Gas processing also runs inland: Pertamina's Jambaran-Tiung Biru project in East Java treats gas with acid gas components, and the gas utility business moves gas by pipeline to power plants and industry. Methane dominates, but refrigerants, condensate, acid gas removal and cryogenic equipment make each site more than one hazard.

Cold equipment and heat on the same site
Cryogenic equipment sits near compressors and heaters. The certificate fixes the ambient range, and the temperature class sets the maximum surface temperature.
Jetties and loading arms
Marine areas bring spray, wind and rain. IP68 sealing and rugged build are designed for that environment.
Distance and isolation
Tangguh and Donggi-Senoro are far from major service centres, so repair route and spares are part of the evaluation.
Dust is the exception
Dust is a smaller concern at LNG plants than at fertiliser or coal sites. Zone 21 capability matters mainly for staff who move between the gas plant and its power or utility areas.

Trains, shutdowns and approval for an explosion proof mobile phone in the gas sector
An LNG plant runs its trains continuously and shuts one at a time for planned maintenance. During those periods, contractors arrive in large numbers to a plant that continues to produce on the other trains. Operators in this sector are often international groups or Indonesian state entities, each with its own HSE and procurement processes. We have not seen published requirements for handsets, so we do not name any. Ask each plant's engineering and procurement teams what documentation they require; IECEx evidence is the usual base, with Indonesian type approval handled separately.

Operators move through treatment, liquefaction and utilities, recording readings and photographing defects. One device carries the camera, torch and push-to-talk.

With one train down and the others live, access control matters. Enrolment in the plant's MDM console keeps a record of which devices are in which area.

Jetty inspection and loading
Jetty crews work in rain and spray around loading arms and need a sealed handset with voice and camera in a classified area.

Is gas group IIC needed at an LNG plant?
Methane is IIA, but plants also handle ethylene, hydrogen or refrigerants that can be IIB or IIC. A single IIC-marked handset is the simplest policy.
Does the phone work with sour gas?
H2S is a toxic hazard handled by personal gas detectors and procedure. A phone does not replace that. The device is designed for explosive atmospheres, not toxic ones.
