Explosion proof mobile phone for refining and petrochemical sites in Egypt

Egypt’s refining and petrochemical capacity is concentrated at Suez and around Alexandria, with a further refinery in Upper Egypt, and most of it was built in stages over several decades. An explosion proof mobile phone for Egypt’s refineries has to work in process units where the area classification was drawn at different times, in tank farms and loading bays, and beside a polyethylene complex where ethylene changes the gas group. This page is for the HSE, turnaround and telecoms staff at those sites. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone areas at Suez and Alexandria

In Suez, the Suez Oil Processing Company (SOPC) is an EGPC refining affiliate that industry reporting describes as building a new coking and diesel complex, which means construction contractors working in and beside live process areas. Around Alexandria the cluster is denser. Alexandria Petroleum Company is one long-established refiner. MIDOR, the Middle East Oil Refinery in the El Amreya zone, was reported expanded to 160,000 barrels a day, with EGPC as its largest shareholder. To the west of the city, Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals (SIDPEC) produces ethylene and polyethylene under the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company, ECHEM. A refinery gives you crude distillation, conversion units, hydrotreaters with hydrogen, amine and sulphur units where hydrogen sulphide is handled, and tank farms. A cracker complex adds ethylene, which sits in group IIB, and hydrogen in IIC. The certification question here is therefore not ‘is it Zone 1’, but ‘does the marking cover the group and temperature class of the unit you are standing in’, and the area classification drawing answers that.

What mixed-age plants do to a handset

The new unit and the old unit share a fence and a permit office. The handset has to be useful in both.

Different drawings for different decades

Older areas may carry documents of varying quality, and an expansion adds new drawings. A handset marked II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 as a target covers the gas groups present, but only the current classification drawing tells a technician where it may go.

Heat and process vapour

Refineries add radiant heat and hot piping to the climate. The temperature class on the certificate is what the instrument engineer checks against the maximum surface temperature allowed in the area, and the handset’s IP68 sealing helps with dust and washdown.

Turnaround congestion

In a shutdown a unit can hold hundreds of contractors and a permit queue. Android 16 with enterprise enrolment lets the site issue a pre-configured handset that carries the permit, area map and contacts.

Camera and data policy

Refineries restrict photography, but inspection teams need images for defect records. The 50 MP camera under owner-controlled policy deals with both, and the policy can be set differently for operators and contractors.

Long shifts and long walks

Process units, tank farms and jetties are spread out. A 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a working shift, and four-constellation GNSS helps place an observation in a big yard.

How work is organised · Refining

Turnarounds, rounds and who holds the approval

Operations01

Round-based operation

Operators walk set routes of pumps, heaters and tank areas and report to a central control room. The handset replaces the radio, the camera and the paper log.

Turnaround02

Planned shutdowns

Major turnarounds are planned months ahead and bring a large temporary workforce. The best time to enrol handsets is before the contractors arrive, so that policy and applications are in place on day one.

Questions · Refining and petrochemicals

Frequently asked questions

Is ethylene a different gas group from refinery gas?

Ethylene is group IIB; typical refinery hydrocarbon vapour is IIA, and hydrogen is IIC. A device marked for IIC covers all three, which is why a polyethylene site and a refinery can use the same marking target.

Does a refinery need a different device from a cracker?

The protection concept is the same. What differs is the gas group, temperature class and area classification in each unit, which must be checked against the issued certificate.

Can the device be used during a turnaround?

Not yet. It is pre-launch with certification in progress, and no handset can enter a classified area before its certificate is issued.

Who decides on equipment at SIDPEC or MIDOR?

Each company’s engineering and HSE function decides, under its own rules. ECHEM or EGPC may influence standards but do not replace the site decision.
