Explosion proof mobile phone for EGPC-licensed sites

The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation sits behind most of Egypt’s oil and a good share of its gas, which makes the explosion proof mobile phone question in Egypt a layered one. EGPC’s own refining and distribution assets are one conversation. The Gulf of Suez, Western Desert and Delta fields that it holds through joint operating companies and production-sharing agreements are another, and there the operating company usually holds the pen on equipment. This page is for the HSE, telecoms and procurement staff who need to know which conversation they are actually in. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone meets EGPC’s portfolio

EGPC is the state petroleum body under the Ministry of Petroleum, and it works through operating companies rather than a single estate. On the Gulf of Suez, GUPCO (the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company) runs offshore fields and pipelines from its main base at Ras Shukeir, and Petrobel, EGPC’s joint company with Eni, operates the Belayim fields on the eastern shore. Downstream, EGPC oversees a refining system that industry reporting puts at nine refineries, many of them old, from Suez to Alexandria to Assiut. The result is a spread of classified-area types under one name: offshore platforms and marine loading in the Gulf, desert gathering stations inland, and refinery process units and tank farms in the north. Gas groups follow the product. Crude and natural gas fall in IIA, ethylene and hydrogen sulphide in IIB, and hydrogen in IIC, which is why a handset marked Ex ib IIC is the usual specification request rather than a group-by-group selection.

Operating companies and affiliates

EGPC
State petroleum corporation; holder of concessions and partner in the operating companies.

Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company; offshore fields with its main base at Ras Shukeir.
Petrobel
EGPC and Eni company operating the Belayim fields on the Gulf of Suez shore.
Suez Oil Company (SUCO)
Gulf of Suez producer working alongside EGPC-held concessions.
SOPC
Suez Oil Processing Company, the EGPC refining affiliate at Suez.
MIDOR

Classified areas you will meet

Offshore platforms
Wellhead, separator and compressor areas, plus helideck and boat landing approaches.
Onshore terminals
Ras Shukeir and similar shore bases handling crude, produced water and gas.
Gathering stations
Western Desert and Eastern Desert fields spread across long distances.
Refinery process units
Distillation, conversion and treating plants; hydrogen in hydrotreating.
Tank farms and loading
Crude and product storage, road and marine loading bays.
Offices and camps
Outside the boundary, where charging and MDM provisioning normally happen.

What EGPC’s mix of sites asks of a handset

A portfolio that runs from offshore platforms to desert wellfields does not give a handset a single duty cycle. These are the five differences that matter when one device is meant to serve all of them.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

One device across several operators

EGPC-held assets are run by companies with their own contractor lists and area drawings. A single Zone 1 specification, with the marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, lets an HSE officer compare one certificate against several area classifications instead of several devices.

Boat transfers on the Gulf of Suez

A platform crew arrives by vessel or helicopter, and a faulty handset cannot be swapped the same shift. IP68 sealing and rugged build are specified with that isolation in mind.

Long drives between wellfields

Eastern and Western Desert crews drive between sites rather than walking a plant. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to cover a working shift, and four-constellation GNSS gives a position where the desert offers no landmark.

Photography on a state-controlled estate

Cameras are restricted around production and export infrastructure. The 50 MP camera is useful for defect records, and Android Enterprise policy lets the owner’s console restrict it by site or role.

Arabic and English in one workforce

EGPC affiliates and their international partners run mixed teams. The interface and the user manual are intended in both languages.

How it is organised · EGPC

Who decides, and how work reaches the handset

Concessions01

Upstream approval follows the operator

Under a production-sharing or joint-operating structure, the day-to-day operating company applies its own engineering standard to equipment entering a classified area. EGPC’s concession terms sit behind that, so the first question is always whose field it is. Ask the operator’s HSE and procurement teams what documents they require from a handset supplier.

Downstream02

Refinery work comes in turnarounds

At refining affiliates such as SOPC and MIDOR, routine rounds are punctuated by planned shutdowns when the contractor population and permit traffic multiply. A handset that carries permits and a site directory is most useful in those weeks, and enrolment in the owner’s MDM before the shutdown starts is what keeps it manageable.

Supply route03

Local registration comes first

Egyptian state companies generally expect supply through a locally registered partner. We have not verified any single EGPC vendor programme and make no claim about one; ask the relevant affiliate’s procurement office for its registration and technical-evaluation steps before you plan the timeline.

Questions · EGPC

Frequently asked questions

Does EGPC publish an approved device list for Zone 1 phones?

We are not aware of a single EGPC list and do not claim one exists. Equipment acceptance is normally decided by the operating company or affiliate that owns the site, using the certificate and its own engineering rules.

Which EGPC site type should be evaluated first?

Start with the one where the area classification is clearest and the handset’s job is most obvious, usually a refinery turnaround or a shore terminal with a defined round. Offshore platforms add boat logistics and are better as a second stage.

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for EGPC-linked sites?

No. It is pre-launch, with IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch, and Egyptian EOS conformity being pursued alongside. Nothing can be used in a classified area until the certificate covering it is issued.

Does a Gulf of Suez platform need a different handset from a refinery?

The protection concept is the same, Ex ib for Zone 1. The differences are in sealing, battery life, logistics and policy, and the certificate’s ambient range and gas groups must be checked against each site’s classification.
