Explosion proof mobile phone for oil and gas in Egypt

Egypt’s upstream industry is three different jobs under one flag, and an explosion proof mobile phone for Egypt’s oil and gas sector has to survive all three: ageing offshore platforms in the Gulf of Suez, a deepwater Mediterranean gas development at Zohr that is worked mostly from onshore, and long-distance desert wellfields in the Western Desert. This page covers the hazardous-area picture in each, who runs it, and what a handset has to do on the round. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone zones from the Gulf of Suez to Zohr

The Gulf of Suez is the old heart of Egyptian oil. GUPCO runs offshore fields and pipelines from a mainland base at Ras Shukeir, Petrobel operates the Belayim fields on the eastern shore, and several smaller producers share the same shelf. Platforms here are close-coupled: wellhead, separator, gas treatment and accommodation can sit within a few tens of metres, so the Zone 1 boundary and the walkway to the mess room are neighbours. Zohr is different. Discovered in 2015 and producing since December 2017, it sends gas through subsea wells and a pipeline of roughly 180 km to an onshore plant at Port Said, so the classified-area traffic is concentrated at the onshore facility and its support base. In the Western Desert the pattern is dispersed again: wellsites, gathering lines and central processing facilities miles apart, with a night’s drive between the camp and the farthest pad. The dominant atmosphere across all three is hydrocarbon gas in group IIA, with condensate vapour, and with hydrogen or sulphur compounds only where a given process stream carries them; the operator’s own area classification drawing is the document that settles it.

Who operates

GUPCO
Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company; offshore fields and pipelines run from Ras Shukeir.
Petrobel
EGPC and Eni company; Belayim fields, and co-operator of Zohr on behalf of Petroshorouk.
Petroshorouk
Contracting entity for the Zohr concession, with international and Egyptian partners.
Suez Oil Company (SUCO)
Gulf of Suez producer on the same shelf.
EGPC and EGAS
State holders of the concessions and production-sharing agreements.

Where the hazard sits

Offshore platforms
Wellheads, separators and gas treatment on compact decks.
Shore terminals
Crude stabilisation and export at Ras Shukeir and equivalent bases.
Zohr onshore plant, Port Said
Gas receiving and treatment at the end of the subsea line.
Desert gathering stations
Separation and pumping at remote Western Desert sites.
Vessels and jetties
Marine support, crew-change and loading areas with their own boundaries.
Built for local conditions

What each upstream setting does to a handset

The hazardous-area certificate gets a device past the gate. After that, the environment decides whether it is still in a shirt pocket at the end of the hitch.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh
Camera50 MP
OSAndroid 16

Salt air and vibration offshore

Older Gulf of Suez decks mean corrosive spray and engine vibration for the whole stay. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design answer, and the certificate is where you read the temperature class: the marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

A job that starts with a boat or a flight

Crew changes on offshore assets run to a fixed schedule, so a handset that fails mid-hitch is a spare someone has to carry out. That is why the 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift with no charging inside the classified boundary.

Distance in the Western Desert

Pads can be a long way from the nearest landmark. Four-constellation GNSS puts a coordinate on a work order, and the 50 MP camera can attach a photograph to it, which is easier than describing a pad by its tag alone.

Remote support from a control room

A technician on a platform or a pad often needs to show a fault to an engineer onshore. A single Android 16 handset carries voice, photographs and maintenance apps, and it can be managed from the operator’s existing console.

Mixed languages and mixed employers

Operators, drilling contractors and service companies share a site. Arabic and English on the same build, with Android Enterprise policies by user group, keeps contractor and operator profiles separate.

How work is organised · Upstream

Hitches, shutdowns and the contractor on the pad

Offshore01

Platform hitches

Crews live on or near the asset and move on fixed rotations. Routine rounds are short and frequent, so the handset’s first job is to replace the paper log, the camera and a radio on one belt-worn device that never leaves the Zone 1 area.

Zohr onshore02

Plant start-up and support work

Gas reception and treatment at Port Said is a process plant with a permit-to-work regime and a large contractor population during shutdowns. See the dedicated page on explosion proof phone for Eni / Petrobel at Zohr for how that operator’s approvals are likely to run.

Approvals03

Operator-led, not one national list

Acceptance of equipment is usually set by the operating company, with EGPC as concession holder (see explosion proof phone for EGPC-licensed sites). We have not verified any specific registration programme, so ask the operator’s procurement and HSE teams what they need from a supplier.

Frequently asked questions

Which upstream environment is hardest for a handset?

Usually the offshore deck, because spray, vibration and the cost of replacing a failed unit all arrive together. Desert sites test battery life and dust sealing instead.

Does a Zone 1 phone cover the Zohr onshore plant at Port Said?

The design target is Zone 1 and Zone 21. Whether it suits a given building or yard depends on that area’s classification, gas group and temperature class, which the plant’s HSE team must confirm against the issued certificate.

Is gas group IIC needed for upstream work?

Most upstream hydrocarbon service falls in IIA, but hydrogen can appear in treating and some utilities. An Ex ib IIC marking target covers the whole range and avoids per-area exceptions.

When can an upstream site buy an IS-04Z1?

Not yet. It launches in Q4 2026 and IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification are still in progress, with Egyptian EOS conformity being pursued alongside.
