Idku, on the Mediterranean coast east of Alexandria, is where Egyptian LNG liquefies gas for export, and it is one of two LNG sites in the country. Industry reporting describes Idku as a two-train plant of about 7.2 million tonnes a year, owned by a consortium that includes Shell, Petronas and the Egyptian state companies EGAS and EGPC, with Shell named as operator; confirm the present structure with the company. What matters for a handset is the process chain. Feed gas comes in by pipeline and passes through inlet separation, acid gas removal and dehydration, then through the liquefaction trains where it is cooled to around minus 162 degrees Celsius. The product runs to insulated storage tanks and out along the jetty to carriers through loading arms. Methane is group IIA, but liquefaction also involves refrigerant inventories and condensate, so the plant’s area classification drawing is the document that defines which parts are Zone 1, Zone 2 or outside. The loading jetty adds a marine boundary that moves with the carrier. Ambient conditions are coastal rather than desert: humid, salt-laden, hot in summer.
A liquefaction plant is a place where the cold equipment is insulated from the people, but the humidity and the salt reach everyone.
The LNG is cold; the technician’s hands and device are not. The temperature class on the certificate and its ambient range are the numbers to check, and the marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. A handset is not designed to touch cryogenic surfaces and should never be used that way.
Idku sits on the coast, so spray and humidity reach the handset all year. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design answer.
Export infrastructure is camera-restricted. The 50 MP camera is useful for logging a leaking flange or a damaged insulation joint, and the owner’s Android Enterprise console can disable it by area or role.
Between the trains, storage and jetty a technician covers a long walk with nowhere to charge inside the boundary. A 4,000 mAh battery is specified for a full shift, and four-constellation GNSS shows where on the site an observation was made.
The workforce includes Egyptian and expatriate staff. The interface and manual are intended in both languages.
Operators walk set routes through the trains and utilities, reporting readings and anomalies to a central control room. One handset for voice, photographs and notes reduces the equipment signed out at the start of a shift.
Loading involves a tightly controlled sequence between ship and shore. Communications are normally through marine radio and fixed systems; a handset is for supporting staff on the jetty area under the loading master’s rules, not a replacement for those.
Trains are taken down for maintenance in planned campaigns, with inspection and mechanical contractors on site.
