Gas enters the system from offshore Mediterranean and Delta fields and from the Western Desert. GASCO processes and transmits much of it, including NGL work at El Amreya near Alexandria. Some reaches the two coastal export plants. Idku, operated through Egyptian LNG, has two trains and is reported to be Shell-operated. Damietta, on the Mediterranean coast near Port Said, is owned by SEGAS; after a restructuring agreed in 2020 and 2021 the shareholding was reported as Eni 50 per cent, EGAS 40 per cent and EGPC 10 per cent, and the plant resumed exports in 2021 after being idle since 2012. Earlier descriptions naming Union Fenosa Gas as operator relate to the previous ownership. The hazardous-area picture is a gradient: methane in IIA through most of the chain, with ethylene or propane refrigerant and condensate in liquefaction units, and NGL fractionation inland. That is why the specification request is usually Ex ib IIC rather than a gas-by-gas selection.
The same device may pass through a humid coast, a dry yard and a loading jetty in a month. These are the differences that matter.
LNG storage and transfer involve cryogenic temperatures at the equipment, not at the user’s hand. Check the certificate’s ambient range and the marking target of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and do not assume that an Ex mark says anything about contact with cold surfaces.
Idku and Damietta add humidity and salt to the gas hazard; inland stations add dust and distance. IP68 sealing and rugged build cover both.
