Built for local conditions

Built for Egyptian conditions

Egypt runs classified-area operations across desert, offshore and Mediterranean coastal environments. These are the points an Egyptian evaluator presses on, and how the design answers them.

For evaluators in Egypt, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Desert heat inland, humidity on the coast; Sand and dust across onshore sites; Offshore-grade durability; Arabic and English on one build; Managed like the rest of the fleet.

Battery4,000 mAh

OSAndroid 16

Desert heat inland, humidity on the coast

Western Desert and Gulf of Suez sites run extreme dry heat, while Idku and Damietta add Mediterranean humidity. The ATEX marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the temperature class is what an instrumentation engineer checks first.

Sand and dust across onshore sites

Blowing sand is a constant at Western Desert and Gulf of Suez onshore facilities. IP68 sealing is what keeps a handset working through it, and the design covers Zone 21 as well as Zone 1.

Offshore-grade durability

Gulf of Suez platforms are a boat transfer from shore, and a failed handset is not a same-shift replacement. rugged build and a shift-length 4,000 mAh battery are specified with that isolation in mind.

Arabic and English on one build

Egyptian operations run with a mixed national and expatriate technical workforce. Android 16 carries both interface languages on the same handset.

Managed like the rest of the fleet

EMM and MDM enrolment pushes the corporate profile and camera policy centrally, which matters where photography around LNG and export infrastructure runs on strict permit control.

Approvals in Egypt

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

IECEx certification is the technical basis Egyptian operators and EGPC work from. Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) conformity marking is being pursued alongside launch.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

Conformity in Egypt runs through the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, working alongside the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC) for customs clearance. For hazardous-area equipment the technical evidence behind that conformity is an IECEx Certificate of Conformity, and because this product is a phone it also needs National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) type approval for the radio. None of the three is finished yet.

Getting past the site gate is a separate exercise from national conformity. EGPC and its operating affiliates, along with international operators like Eni, each run their own vendor-registration and engineering-approval process for equipment entering a classified area, and supply is normally expected to run through an Egyptian-registered partner. A device can be fully EOS-cleared for import and still be unlisted on an operator’s own equipment register, so plan for two timelines rather than one.

Use cases · Egypt

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Egypt includes: Platform rounds in the Gulf of Suez; Zohr and the GASCO network; Terminal operations at Idku and Damietta; Turnarounds at Suez and Alexandria.

Upstream01

Platform rounds in the Gulf of Suez

An operator walking a round between wellheads and separators on a Gulf of Suez platform needs to log a reading, photograph a corroded fitting and reach the onshore control room without carrying three devices. Four-constellation GNSS puts a position on record where there is no landmark offshore.

Gas processing02

Zohr and the GASCO network

Gas processing and transmission infrastructure around Zohr and the wider GASCO grid sit inside Zone 1 gas atmospheres. Ex ib IIC T4 intrinsic safety covers the hydrogen-group service found in gas processing, not only common hydrocarbon groups.

LNG03

Terminal operations at Idku and Damietta

LNG liquefaction and loading involve cryogenic handling alongside conventional Zone 1 gas risk, and photography is tightly permit-controlled around export infrastructure. A managed, camera-policy-enforced device fits that environment directly.

Refining04

Turnarounds at Suez and Alexandria

A refinery turnaround multiplies the contractor population and the permit traffic with it. One enrolled handset carrying the permit application, the site directory and the camera cuts what every crew signs out in the morning.

How to buy · Egypt

How to evaluate and buy in Egypt

The IS-04Z1 launches in Q4 2026. None of these steps needs a purchase order, and they are ordered so that your approvals and our certification run in parallel.

  1. 01

    Send us the area classification

Give us the zone, gas group and temperature class for the areas a device would enter, plus the operator whose approval you work under. That is enough for us to say plainly where certification stands against your requirement.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the full specification and a written list of the certifications in progress with target dates. An HSE officer can start an equipment selection justification with it, and procurement can open a vendor file.

  3. 03

    Join the evaluation programme

Evaluation units will be offered to Egyptian operators and contractors for handling and MDM trials in safe areas, moving to classified-area pilots once the certificate exists.

  4. 04

    Supply through an Egyptian partner

Vendor-registration processes at EGPC and its affiliates favour a locally registered supplier who can hold the EOS documentation and carry spares near Suez or Alexandria. Evaluation quantities can be supplied directly while that channel is appointed.

Questions · Egypt

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Egypt?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Egypt →
Can we buy an explosion proof mobile phone from SAMS in Egypt today?

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and every certification behind it, including IECEx, ATEX and the EOS conformity route, is still in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. What exists today is the datasheet, the certification schedule and a place in the evaluation programme.

What is the price of an explosion proof phone in Egypt?

We do not publish one. Until certification completes there is no list price and no quoted delivery, and a supplier who gives you a firm figure for an uncertified Ex device is telling you something they cannot support. Pre-launch pricing is available on request against a stated quantity and site.

Is an explosion proof phone the same thing as an intrinsically safe phone?

They are different protection concepts, although the search terms are used interchangeably. Flameproof, written Ex d, contains an explosion inside a heavy enclosure. Intrinsic safety, written Ex ib, limits circuit energy so ignition cannot occur, and that is what a Zone 1 handset uses. The marking target here is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.

Which zones and gas groups is it designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21, gas and dust. NEC 500 Class I Division 1 is being pursued alongside, which matters on Egyptian projects run by international contractors working to the American code.

Will EGPC or Eni accept it on site?

That decision belongs to the operator and follows the certificates rather than preceding them. The IECEx certificate is the evidence their engineering review is built on, and the vendor file is being prepared with an Egyptian partner.

Will it cope with Gulf of Suez and Western Desert conditions?

It is designed to, with IP68 sealing and rugged build behind it. The number to evaluate is the temperature class on the certificate, checked against the maximum surface temperature your area classification permits.

Does it work in Arabic?

Yes. Android 16 runs the interface in Arabic or English on the same handset and the user manual will be issued in both.

How do repairs and battery replacement work?

A device holding an Ex certificate cannot be opened on site or repaired by a general phone workshop without invalidating it. The service route runs through SAMS and the Egyptian partner it is appointing, with spares pooled near Suez.
