Explosion proof mobile phone for GASCO's gas network

GASCO is a network rather than a site, and that changes what an explosion proof mobile phone for Egypt’s gas processing and transmission has to do. The Egyptian Natural Gas Company, set up in 1997, runs processing and pipeline operations that move gas from producing areas to power stations, industry, homes and the export route, with its best-known processing asset at El Amreya near Alexandria. This page is for the HSE, engineering and telecoms staff deciding what crews can carry at a plant, a pigging station or a compressor yard. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

Explosion proof mobile phone areas inside the GASCO network

GASCO is a subsidiary of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), which holds 70 per cent; Egypt Gas and Petrojet hold 15 per cent each, according to published company profiles. Its processing flagship is the Western Desert Gas Complex at El Amreya, Alexandria, the first NGL plant in Egypt, producing an ethane and propane mixture for the petrochemical industry as well as commercial propane. It has been extended with an additional train, and the plant’s liquids work means ethane and propane handling, which sit in gas group IIA, alongside the methane that dominates the rest of the network. Elsewhere the work is pipelines: block valve stations, pressure reduction and metering stations, scraper traps and compressor stations spread over long distances. Most of those sites are small, unattended or lightly staffed, and what classifies them is usually the equipment that breaks the containment boundary: scraper launchers, vents, relief and sample points, rather than a whole building.

What a distributed network does to a handset

A single plant gives you a fixed place to charge and to enrol. A network gives you a van, a route and a spread of sites that may have no staff at all.

OSAndroid 16

Crews who travel between sites

A maintenance team works a route of compressor stations and valve sites in a day. The 4,000 mAh battery is specified to carry a full working shift without charging inside a classified area, and IP68 sealing copes with dust and washdown.

Coordinates where there are no addresses

Remote pipeline sites are found by coordinates. Four-constellation GNSS lets a technician log a position and attach a 50 MP photograph to a work order, so the planner sees the actual condition of a valve or flange.

Standardising across many sites

Mixed device types across a network make approval records hard to keep. One handset with one certificate and one marking, targeted at II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, means the equipment register has a single entry to maintain.

Pigging and isolation permits

A permit for a pig run or a section isolation has to be visible to the crew at the trap. A managed Android 16 device can carry the permit app and the site contact list for the route.

Fleet control from one place

Android Enterprise enrolment lets the owner’s console push the profile, restrict the camera where policy requires, and wipe a unit that is lost on a long route.

How work is organised · GASCO

Routes, shutdowns and the approval question

Routine01

Route-based inspection

Most pipeline work is driven by inspection routes and call-outs rather than a single plant shift. Handsets are most valuable when they work the same way at the first and the last site on the route.

Shutdowns02

Planned stops at processing plants

At a complex like El Amreya, planned outages bring contractors in numbers, each with permits and area briefings. Pre-enrolled devices help the plant keep control of who carries what into a classified area.

Approval03

Network standard, with site additions

GASCO’s engineering function is likely to apply a network-wide equipment standard, but local site rules can add to it. We have not verified GASCO’s vendor registration steps; ask its procurement and HSE teams for the current requirements. For the wider picture see explosion proof phone for LNG and gas processing in Egypt and the EGPC page.

Questions · GASCO

Frequently asked questions

Is GASCO one site or many?

Many. It is a network of processing and transmission assets, with the El Amreya complex near Alexandria as a major processing site and a long line of pipeline stations beyond it.

What gas groups does a transmission network involve?

Mostly methane, in group IIA, with ethane and propane at the NGL plant. Hydrogen is not a normal process stream, but an IIC target covers it and avoids a second specification.

Can the IS-04Z1 be used on a GASCO site yet?

No. It is pre-launch, with certification in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. Any acceptance by GASCO would follow its own review of the issued certificates.

Who is responsible for repairs on a long network?

An Ex-certified handset cannot be opened or repaired in a general workshop. The service route is through SAMS and its Egyptian partner, and spares location should be agreed with the operator in advance.
