Coastal humidity and salt
The plant sits on the Mediterranean shoreline. IP68 sealing and rugged build are the design basis, and the operator will want to see the certificate’s ambient range stated against the site’s conditions.
Zohr is the largest gas field found in the Mediterranean, and the work that keeps it producing is split between a deepwater subsea system and an onshore plant at Port Said. Anyone looking for an explosion proof mobile phone in Egypt for Eni and Petrobel will find that most handset use falls onshore, and that the paperwork is shaped by an international operator as much as by Egyptian rules. This page is for the HSE, telecoms and contractor-management staff who have to decide what is allowed through the gate. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.
Launching Q4 2026 · IECEx and ATEX documentation in progress
Eni’s Egyptian activity runs through two company names that are easily confused. Petrobel is the Eni and EGPC operating company, long associated with the Belayim fields on the Gulf of Suez shore and with Nile Delta and Western Desert assets. Petroshorouk is the contracting entity for the Zohr concession, and published reports describe Petrobel as acting for it as co-operator. Zohr was discovered in 2015 and began producing in December 2017. Its wells are subsea, and the gas travels about 180 km by pipeline to an onshore treatment plant at Port Said before entering the national grid. That geography decides where a handset is used. The deepwater end is unmanned from the point of view of a walking round, so the people who need a Zone 1 device are the plant operators, maintenance crews, inspectors and permit holders at the onshore facility, plus the marine and logistics teams around it. Natural gas there is group IIA, with the usual treating chemicals, condensate handling and utility systems each carrying their own area classification, and some of it Zone 2 rather than Zone 1.
The Port Said environment is coastal, humid and busy with contractors. These are the points an operator’s engineer will press on.

Gas export infrastructure has strict image control. The 50 MP camera is useful for inspection records, and an Android Enterprise policy can disable or restrict it by zone or by contractor group from the existing management console.
An Italian operator’s engineers are likely to expect the European marking in the documentation alongside IECEx. Our target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 under ATEX, with IECEx in parallel; neither certificate exists yet.
Shutdowns bring in many contractors who each need a handset enrolled, provisioned and later wiped. Android 16 with enterprise enrolment makes that a console task rather than a hands-on one.
A 4,000 mAh battery for a full shift and four-constellation GNSS for locating a tie-in or a leak in an open yard are specified so that the device does not need a safe-area charging trip mid-round.
A treatment plant runs in shifts with a routine round per area. A handset replaces the paper round sheet and the radio for that round, and stays in the zone with the operator until handover.
Planned plant stoppages multiply permits and contractor badges. Pre-enrolled handsets, locked to approved applications, are what keep the permit and site directory in one place for crews who are on the site for a few weeks only.
We have not verified any specific Eni vendor programme in Egypt and do not claim one. Ask the operator’s procurement and HSE teams which certificates, declarations and local registration they require, and see the explosion proof phone for Egyptian oil and gas page for the wider upstream picture and GASCO’s network for what happens to the gas next.
Mainly onshore. The wells are subsea and the processing plant is at Port Said, so most classified-area handset use is at the plant, around pipeline tie-ins and in the marine support areas.
That is Eni’s decision. Because its engineers work in the European system, ATEX documentation is likely to be asked for as well, which is why the programme runs both. No certificate has been issued yet.
They are different company names with overlapping teams. Ask the site HSE team which entity’s engineering standard governs the area you will work in and request that standard in writing.
No. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and the planned launch is Q4 2026.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Egypt. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
