Explosion proof mobile phone for Austria, Zone 1 and Zone 21

The IS-04Z1 is an ex proof phone designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for gas and dust atmospheres, built for refinery turnarounds, gas stations on the transit grid, steel works and fibre plants. It is pre-launch: the certification programme is running, and Austrian operators and contractors can read the evidence and test a unit while it does. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.

Where it works in Austria

Austria is landlocked and its hazardous areas are processing rather than production. Crude arrives by pipeline from Trieste, gas arrives from the east and leaves for Italy and Germany, and the heavy industry sits on the Danube and in the alpine valleys. A single working day can move from a Zone 1 pump house to a Zone 21 bagging hall without leaving the same company.

Operators and contractors such as OMV, Gas Connect Austria and Borealis need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Schwechat, Baumgarten an der March and Linz. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Austrian plant conditions

Austria asks a handset to be two things at once: a refinery device and a dust device, used outdoors in an alpine winter and indoors in a hot mill.

For evaluators in Austria, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Vapour at the refinery, powder in the mill; Winter outside, heat inside; Sites without a person at the next building; A shift with no charger inside the zone; German on the screen and in the file; Evidence shaped for the VEXAT.

Vapour at the refinery, powder in the mill

The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 and dust protection for Zone 21 belongs to the same certification programme. A group that runs a cracker and a starch plant does not have to specify two different phones for them.

Winter outside, heat inside

IP68 sealing and rugged build cover an unheated compressor yard in February and a rolling mill in August. The ambient range that the certificate fixes is published with the datasheet rather than promised beforehand.

Sites without a person at the next building

A wellhead in the Marchfeld or a valve station on the transit line is often worked alone. Four-constellation GNSS and 4G LTE keep a position and a link where a single operator network thins out between villages.

A shift with no charger inside the zone

The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a whole shift with the camera and a maintenance application open, which matters when the nearest socket is on the other side of the fence.

German on the screen and in the file

Android 16 carries a German interface, and the manual, safe-use instructions and declaration of conformity are produced in German alongside English. Austrian acceptance treats German documentation as a condition, not a courtesy.

Evidence shaped for the VEXAT

The certificate number, equipment group, category and temperature class are supplied in the form the explosion protection document needs them, so the safety officer can paste them into section 5 rather than reconstruct them from a brochure.

Approvals in Austria

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

ATEX 2014/34/EU, transposed here by the Explosionsschutzverordnung 2015, is the entire product-side requirement and no Austrian approval follows it. What is distinctly Austrian sits on the employer side, in the VEXAT, and that is where an Austrian evaluation spends its time.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

On the product side Austria is short and predictable. ATEX 2014/34/EU is transposed by the Explosionsschutzverordnung 2015, which took effect on 20 April 2016 and replaced the 1996 ordinance. A notified body issues the certificate, the manufacturer draws up the EU declaration of conformity and applies the CE marking, and that is the end of it: there is no separate Austrian product approval for equipment intended for potentially explosive atmospheres. Austrian buyers frequently see TÜV AUSTRIA on adjacent paperwork, and any European notified body certificate is equally valid here. Radio functions run under RED 2014/53/EU, with market surveillance handled by the Austrian telecoms authorities, RTR and the Fernmeldebehörde.

The employer side is where Austria differs from its neighbours, and it is a difference worth understanding before a German document set is copied across the border. Austria does not use the German BetrSichV. It uses the VEXAT, the Verordnung explosionsfähige Atmosphären, made under the ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz, which requires a specific explosion risk assessment, zone classification, and an Explosionsschutzdokument under section 5 that names the equipment and the reasoning behind it. The Arbeitsinspektion enforces this and publishes a commentary on the ordinance, and the AUVA issues practical guidance for it. In practice that means procurement asks for the certificate number, the full marking string and German documentation, then the safety officer decides whether the entry in the explosion protection document can be defended at the next inspection.

Use cases · Austria

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Austria includes: Stillstand work at a refinery on the edge of a capital city; Compressor and valve checks on the transit grid; Gas and dust inside one Linz or Lenzing fence; One engineer and many wellheads in the Vienna basin.

Refining01

Stillstand work at a refinery on the edge of a capital city

A Schwechat turnaround puts hundreds of contractor staff into classified areas for a few concentrated weeks, next to a residential belt and an airport fuel system. When every crew carries a Zone 1 handset enrolled in the site console, the work permit, the isolation photograph and the sign-off stay inside one system instead of travelling back to the office in a folder.

Gas infrastructure02

Compressor and valve checks on the transit grid

Baumgarten and the compressor stations feeding Italy and Germany are classified areas visited rather than staffed. A technician who can photograph a leak indication, log it against the asset and confirm the reading by voice from the yard saves the drive back to a terminal, and the record carries a position with it.

Steel and fibre03

Gas and dust inside one Linz or Lenzing fence

Integrated steel works handle coke oven gas and blast furnace gas alongside coal and coke dust, and the electric arc furnaces planned for Linz and Donawitz from 2027 add new equipment to the same site. A viscose plant sits in the same category, with solvent vapour on one side and fibre dust on the other. One device rated for both zone types removes the habit of swapping handsets at internal boundaries.

Upstream04

One engineer and many wellheads in the Vienna basin

The Matzen area and the fields around it are mature, widely spread and worked by small teams driving between locations. Equipment there has to hold a data connection outdoors, survive a winter tailgate and let one person document a job properly without a second pair of hands.

How to buy · Austria

How to evaluate and buy in Austria

Nothing here asks for an order. The sequence lets your explosion protection paperwork and our certification programme advance in parallel, so neither waits for the other.

  1. 01

Send the zone and substance data

Tell us the zones, the equipment category, the gas group and the temperature class from your Explosionsschutzdokument, and roughly how many users you would equip. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the full specification, the target marking string and a written status for each certification under way, which is enough for a safety officer to draft the equipment selection entry and for procurement to open a supplier file.

  3. 03

Test a unit in the plant

Evaluation units go to Austrian operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful Austrian trial covers enrolment in your own management console, use with gloves, a full shift in a dusty building and a cold outdoor round.

  4. 04

    Agree the supply route

On completion of certification, supply runs through an Austrian or DACH distribution partner, or direct where a group frame agreement prefers that. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request against a defined quantity and configuration.

Questions · Austria

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Austria?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Austria →
Is the IS-04Z1 already ATEX certified for Austria?

No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the certification programme is in progress, with IECEx running alongside it. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and nothing is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering it exists.

Does Austria require a national approval on top of ATEX?

No. The Explosionsschutzverordnung 2015 transposes ATEX 2014/34/EU directly, so a notified body certificate and the CE marking are the whole product-side requirement. There is no further Austrian scheme for Ex equipment to clear afterwards.

We already have a German BetrSichV file. Does it work in Austria?

Not unchanged. The product evidence transfers because ATEX is European, but the employer duty in Austria comes from the VEXAT rather than the BetrSichV, and section 5 of the VEXAT sets out what the Explosionsschutzdokument must contain. Groups running plants on both sides of the border normally keep one technical dossier and two compliance wrappers.

What will an explosion proof phone cost in Austria?

There is no list price before launch, and any supplier quoting one for a device still in certification is worth a second look. Pre-launch pricing is given against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope, in euros. Evaluation units are issued under a trial agreement rather than sold.

Will the documentation and the interface be in German?

Yes. Android 16 carries a German interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in German alongside English. Austrian safety officers and works councils treat that as a condition of acceptance, so it is planned into the launch.

Is it suitable for Zone 21 dust areas in a steel works or a starch plant?

Zone 21 is a design target of the same programme as Zone 1, because dust is the more common Austrian hazard once you leave refining. Coal and coke dust, wood and pulp dust and starch and sugar dust all belong to that category, and the certificate will state the dust marking and maximum surface temperature explicitly.

Can we join the pilot programme before launch?

Yes. Austrian operators, contractors and technical wholesalers can register interest now, receive the documentation, and take an evaluation unit under a trial agreement while certification continues. That is the normal route for a product still in its certification programme.
