Explosion proof mobile phone for Borealis, Schwechat & Linz

Borealis makes polyethylene and polypropylene in Austria, with olefin supply from the OMV refinery at Schwechat and further production and chemical-park activity at Linz. This page covers the explosion proof mobile phone question for those two Austrian locations: what is classified, how the work is organised, and what the IS-04Z1, an intrinsically safe Zone 1 and Zone 21 handset in certification ahead of its Q4 2026 launch, is designed to do there.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is carried at Borealis in Austria

A polyolefin plant is gas on one side and powder on the other. Ethylene and propylene arrive from the refinery and are polymerised in reactors that typically run with light hydrocarbon diluents and hydrogen to control the chain length; the product leaves the reactor as powder or granule, is degassed, extruded, pelletised, blended and bagged or loaded as bulk. Each step has its own classification: Zone 1 or Zone 2 gas around the reactors and monomer handling, and Zone 21 or Zone 22 dust in silos, conveying lines and bagging halls. At Linz the plant sits inside Chemiepark Linz, a park shared by many companies, so the person carrying the phone often crosses a boundary between operators. Ownership has also changed recently: OMV and XRG announced the formation of Borouge International on 31 March 2026, combining Borealis and Borouge, which this page treats only as context for who procures.

What a polyolefin site does to a handset

The marking of the device decides where it can go, and the plant decides how it is used. These are the working conditions that make a polyolefin operator different from a refinery.

Gas and dust handled by one person

An operator may inspect a reactor loop in the morning and a bagging line in the afternoon. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust under one certification programme, so there is no need to hold two handsets and swap at an internal boundary.

Fine polymer powder everywhere

Powder gets into every seam. IP68 sealing keeps it out of the housing, and the temperature class and maximum dust surface temperature on the certificate, once issued, are what an instrumentation engineer checks against the layer ignition limits of the product.

Static is the enemy

Polymer powder and pellets build static charge, and the area classification often calls for conductive footwear and controlled clothing. Surface resistance of the housing and any carry accessories are questions to put on the datasheet request, and no answer is assumed here.

Rounds between two operators' fences

At Linz the route can run through park infrastructure that Borealis does not control. A managed handset can be limited to the applications the plant has approved while it is inside the Borealis boundary.

Use cases · Borealis

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Borealis.

Production01

Reactor and extruder inspection

A field operator checks vibration, seal flush and temperature on rotating equipment. Readings go into the logbook from a handset in the area instead of being written down and re-entered later, and any anomaly is photographed with its position.

Dust areas02

Silo and bagging hall housekeeping

Dust accumulation is controlled by routine cleaning rounds. A device built for Zone 21 can record the inspection, photograph a layer of powder on a ledge and raise a work order without the person leaving the area.

Shutdown03

Contractor coordination at a stoppage

A shutdown puts mechanical and electrical contractors into the same classified areas for a few weeks. One enrolled device per crew carries the permit and the daily report, and the console can lock it to the approved applications.

What Borealis's teams would ask of a handset supplier

We have not found a public description of a handset supplier route at Borealis or at Chemiepark Linz and do not claim one. Because the site is a chemical plant under Austrian employer law, the questions are the same ones any operator will raise. The procurement and HSE teams, and where relevant the park operator, should be asked what supplier file and induction applies before a trial is proposed.

Questions · Borealis

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Borealis plants?

No. It is pre-launch and ATEX and IECEx certification are in progress. We do not claim any relationship with Borealis, and the plant's own engineering review decides what is allowed in its classified areas.

Has the Borealis ownership changed?

OMV and XRG announced on 31 March 2026 that Borouge Group International, trading as Borouge International, had been formed by combining Borealis and Borouge. Earlier descriptions of Borealis as owned by OMV and Mubadala are out of date, and equipment acceptance still follows Austrian law at the plant.

Is polymer dust handled under the same certificate as gas?

The programme targets Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust together, but the certificate sets the actual marks. The dust marking and maximum surface temperature are the numbers to compare with the plant's classification once the certificate exists.
