Alone at a valve station
Many grid and field locations are visited by one technician at a time. Four-constellation GNSS and 4G LTE give a position and a link, and a lone-worker application can be installed through the console.
Austria's oil and gas sector is small in volume and long in history: a refinery at Schwechat, mature fields in the Vienna basin, gas storage in Upper Austria and Salzburg, and a high-pressure transit grid centred on Baumgarten. This page explains where an explosion proof mobile phone is used across those assets in Austria and what the IS-04Z1, an intrinsically safe Zone 1 phone designed to ATEX and IECEx and still in certification, has to prove to each operator.
Launching Q4 2026 · ATEX and IECEx programme in progress
Four distinct kinds of site share one sector label. Schwechat is a refinery. The Vienna basin around Matzen is an old onshore field with wells that have produced for decades. Underground storage at places such as Puchkirchen, Haidach and Aigelsbrunn takes summer gas and gives it back in winter; RAG describes more than six billion cubic metres of storage capacity across its facilities. The transit grid around Baumgarten an der March, which feeds Germany, Italy and the domestic market, runs through compressor and metering stations that are usually visited rather than permanently staffed. A handset suitable for all four has to cope with a refinery crew, a lone field technician, a storage site with wellhead and compressor areas, and a hydrogen pilot.
The sector has few sites, but each one asks something different. These are the five conditions that matter most when a team compares devices.

Compressor halls are loud and classified. The question for the datasheet is the loudspeaker output and the microphone noise handling, which we will publish rather than promise beforehand.
Pilot work with hydrogen storage adds gas group IIC to areas that were previously natural gas only. A target marking of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 is designed to cover that.
Fields developed over decades have classification drawings of varying age. The safety officer decides each location; the handset should not depend on a particular vintage of plant.
Documentation in German and English suits both operators and the Arbeitsinspektion, which inspects explosion protection documents.
A technician walking a station records valve positions and noise or vibration observations, photographs a leak indication and reports it from the yard. The position stamp on the record shows exactly which skid was inspected.
Injection and withdrawal seasons change the workload. In the injection season, wells are checked for pressure and integrity; a handset that carries the checklist, photographs and call-out numbers removes paperwork from a round that already covers a large site.
An engineer driving between small locations needs a camera, a position and a reliable call. Records are synchronised when the vehicle reaches coverage, and the work order is closed with a photograph.
We have not found published handset supplier programmes at OMV, Gas Connect Austria or RAG Austria and claim none. Austrian operators in this sector work to the same employer law, so the evidence requested is similar even where the routes differ. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams which supplier file, audit or induction applies, and whether a transmission operator and a storage operator accept the same documents.
The specification is designed to cover Zone 1 gas, including IIC, so the marking is not the limit. The practical limit is that each area has its own classification and the safety officer must confirm suitability.
It raises the gas group to IIC, and the target marking of Ex ib IIC T4 is designed to include it. The temperature class and the exact certificate scope are what to check for a given hydrogen service.
No. Most of the pipeline is buried and unclassified. The classified areas are stations: compressor buildings, valve and metering stations and tie-ins, which is where a handset is carried.
No. Certification is in progress for a Q4 2026 launch, and we have no customer or pilot relationship with any operator named on this page.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Austria. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Tell us the zone, gas group and operator. We will send the datasheet and the certification schedule for your market.
