Explosion proof mobile phone for OMV, Schwechat & Vienna basin

OMV runs Austria's only refinery at Schwechat, the oil and gas fields of the Vienna basin and the group head office in Vienna. This page is for the HSE officers, process engineers and maintenance planners who decide what an explosion proof mobile phone may do inside those fences in Austria, and what the IS-04Z1, an intrinsically safe Zone 1 phone designed to ATEX and IECEx and still in certification, has to show before it is considered.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is carried at OMV in Austria

Schwechat is a refinery on the edge of a capital city, a few kilometres from Vienna airport, with the tank farm and loading facilities that go with it. Crude comes in by pipeline, and the process units turn it into the petrol, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil that Austria's own market needs. The refinery also supplies ethylene and propylene to the neighbouring Borealis plants, so a single fence line carries fuel gas, light olefins and hydrogen-bearing streams. Press reports of the 2022 turnaround described about half the units being shut for a month with around 2,500 additional skilled workers on site, which is the scale a device roll-out has to be sized against. Out in Lower Austria the Vienna basin is a very different job: mature oil and gas fields, old wells, small gathering stations and long drives between them.

Operators and neighbours

OMV
Operates the refinery, the tank farm and the upstream fields; head office in Vienna.
Borealis
Polyolefin producer on the Schwechat site, supplied with olefins from the refinery; see explosion proof phone for Borealis.
Gas Connect Austria
Transmission operator whose high-pressure grid meets OMV's gas sales; see explosion proof phone for Austrian oil, gas and refining.
Turnaround contractors
Scaffolders, insulators, inspection firms and mechanical crews who arrive in large numbers for the planned stoppage.

Classified units and areas

Crude and vacuum distillation
Hydrocarbon vapour at pump seals, flanges and sample points; Zone 1 and Zone 2 depending on the unit.
Conversion and treating units
Hydrogen and light hydrocarbon service, where an IIC rated device is the sensible choice.
Tank farm and loading
Gasoline and diesel storage, floating roofs, loading gantries and vapour recovery.
Pipeline and metering stations
Crude receipt and product dispatch, mostly outdoors.
Wellheads and gathering stations
Small Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas across the Vienna basin fields.

What Schwechat and the Vienna basin do to a handset

A refinery and a field are the two ends of the same company, and a handset that works at one has to be useful at the other. These are the points that come up when a plant team looks at a new device.

A turnaround workforce that arrives in weeks

The planned stoppage is short, intense and full of contractors. A device that enrols into the site console in minutes, carries the work permit and photographs an isolation before sign-off helps more than any feature list. Android Enterprise provisioning is designed for that kind of mass enrolment.

Hydrogen next to hydrocarbons

Treating and conversion units mix hydrogen with heavier vapours. The marking target for the IS-04Z1 is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, with IIC being the gas group that includes hydrogen, so one device is meant to cover the whole fence rather than a separate one per unit.

An airport beside the refinery

Radio use near an airport has its own rules and the refinery lies close to one. The site's telecoms policy governs what may be switched on in which area, and the management console can enforce that centrally.

A winter round in the Weinviertel

Vienna basin locations are often unmanned, and a cold, wet, windy round in January is normal. IP68 sealing and a 4,000 mAh battery are specified for a full shift outdoors, and four-constellation GNSS gives a position at a wellhead without a landmark.

Use cases · OMV Austria

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at OMV.

Refining01

Turnaround permit and isolation records

During a stoppage every crew needs a permit, an isolation list and a photograph of the blind or lock before the job starts. An enrolled Zone 1 handset keeps these in one place, time-stamped and positioned, so the planner reviews them from the control room rather than collecting paper at the gate.

Operations02

Operator rounds in the process units

A board operator and an outside operator share readings, leak sightings and call-outs all shift. The 50 MP camera and the call function replace a radio and a clipboard, and a photo of a weeping flange goes to the maintenance system with its position attached.

Upstream03

Field crews between Vienna basin locations

A small crew drives between wellheads and gathering stations across Lower Austria. GNSS positions, a camera and a battery that lasts the day suit that pattern better than a device that needs a charger in the cab.

Registration and access · OMV Austria

What OMV's teams would ask of a handset supplier

We have not found a public description of a vendor registration route for handset suppliers at OMV, so nothing is claimed here. What any refinery operator in Austria will ask is predictable from the law, and an Ex phone has to survive each of these questions before a purchase order exists. Procurement and HSE teams should be asked directly which supplier file, audit and site induction steps apply.

Certificate and marking
The notified body certificate number, the full marking string, equipment group, category and temperature class, as they will appear on the label.
Entry in the explosion protection document
Under the VEXAT the employer records why each item of equipment is suitable for the zone, so the safety officer needs data in a form that can be defended at inspection.
Documentation language
German manual, safe-use instructions and declaration of conformity.
Console and policy
Enrolment into the existing mobile device management, with camera and radio policy set by the operator.
Questions · OMV Austria

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for OMV's Austrian sites?

No. ATEX and IECEx certification are in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch, and nothing is supplied into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. OMV's own review decides acceptance, and we make no claim to a relationship with OMV.

Would a phone approved at Schwechat be accepted at the Vienna basin fields?

Not automatically. Each site has its own area classification drawings and explosion protection document, so evidence that suits a refinery process unit has to be checked against a field gathering station, which is usually a simpler situation.
