Explosion proof mobile phone for voestalpine, Linz & Donawitz

voestalpine makes steel in Austria at two integrated works, Linz on the Danube and Donawitz near Leoben in the Mur valley. This page is for the HSE and plant teams there who need to know where an explosion proof mobile phone may be carried in an Austrian steelworks, which gases and dusts decide that, and what the IS-04Z1, an intrinsically safe Zone 1 and Zone 21 handset in certification ahead of its Q4 2026 launch, is designed to do.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is carried at voestalpine in Austria

An integrated works turns ore and coal into steel through coke ovens, blast furnaces, a converter steelmaking route, casting and rolling. Each stage produces or handles gas that burns. Coke-oven gas is rich in hydrogen, blast furnace gas and converter gas carry carbon monoxide, and the works collect, clean and distribute them through gas mains and holders to boilers, hot stoves and power stations. Published figures put five blast furnaces in Austria, three at Linz and two at Donawitz. The company's greentec steel programme adds an electric arc furnace at each site, with commissioning planned for 2027 at a stated investment of around 1.5 billion euros, followed by replacement of a further blast furnace at each location from 2030. For a handset that means plant which is both old and under construction.

What a steelworks does to a handset

The Ex marking is the entry ticket. Heat, scale and size of site then decide whether the device survives a shift.

Hydrogen-rich gas that needs an IIC device

Coke-oven gas carries a high proportion of hydrogen, which falls in gas group IIC. The IS-04Z1 marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, so the group fits; the plant's own area classification decides where it applies.

Carbon monoxide is a toxic hazard first

Blast furnace and converter gas are dangerous mostly through toxicity. A phone is not a CO detector, and personal gas monitors stay mandatory in the areas that need them.

Heat and scale near the furnace

Ambient temperature near tapholes and ladles is high, and site rules keep devices out of radiant heat zones. The ambient range on the certificate is published with the datasheet, and no figure is assumed here.

Very large sites on foot

Linz is a works of several square kilometres, and Donawitz is built along a valley. Four-constellation GNSS gives a position in the steel plant, and a battery sized for a shift is more useful than a charger point inside the zone.

Dust that accumulates quietly

Layers on structural steel and cable trays are the hazard. A handset that records a housekeeping inspection with a photograph and position helps the HSE team prove that routines are followed.

Use cases · voestalpine

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at voestalpine.

Gas01

Gas main and holder inspection

Gas network walkers check valves, drains and condensate pots on mains that run through the works. A handset in the classified zone records which valve was checked and photographs corrosion or a leak, with a position instead of a verbal description.

Construction02

Greentec steel project work

Building new furnaces beside live gas mains requires hot work permits and strict area separation. A managed device lets contractors carry the permit, drawings and daily report in the classified area, locked to approved applications.

Outage03

Blast furnace and rolling mill outages

A planned outage brings hundreds of contractors into the works for a few weeks. Enrolled handsets carry the work order, photograph completed jobs and let the planner close tasks without waiting for the end of shift.

What voestalpine's teams would ask of a handset supplier

We have not found a public handset supplier route at voestalpine, and no programme name is claimed. A steelworks in Austria is an employer with an explosion protection document and a large contractor population, so the questions below are what the procurement and HSE teams will almost certainly raise. Ask them directly which supplier file and which plant induction apply, and whether Linz and Donawitz decide separately.

Gas group and marking
IIC coverage for hydrogen-rich gas, with the full marking string.
Dust evidence
Zone 21 marking and maximum surface temperature for coal, coke and ore dust.
Heat limits
The ambient temperature range on the certificate and any accessory restrictions.
Per-site decision
Linz and Donawitz may take separate decisions even under one corporate owner.
Documentation
German manual and declaration of conformity, plus data for the explosion protection document.
Questions · voestalpine

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for voestalpine's steelworks?

No. Certification is in progress for a Q4 2026 launch, and we have no relationship with voestalpine. Plant acceptance follows the works' own review.

Will the electric arc furnaces change the classification?

Not by themselves; electric furnaces are not a gas hazard in the way blast furnaces are. But the transition runs through the 2030s with blast furnaces and new plant side by side, so classification documents will change over time.

Is carbon monoxide covered by an Ex phone?

Ignition and toxicity are separate issues. The Ex marking addresses ignition. Toxic gas protection remains a matter for personal gas monitors and works rules.

Does approval at Linz carry to Donawitz?

Not automatically. The two works have separate classification documents and site rules, and a trial at one does not decide the other.
