Explosion proof mobile phone for Sandoz, Kundl, Tirol

Sandoz makes penicillin-based antibiotics at Kundl in Tirol, a pharmaceutical site where fermentation, solvent extraction, powder handling and clean production all sit under one roof. This page is for the plant, engineering and quality teams who want to know where an explosion proof mobile phone fits at Kundl in Austria, and what the IS-04Z1, an intrinsically safe Zone 1 and Zone 21 phone in certification ahead of Q4 2026, is designed to do in a GMP environment.

Where an explosion proof mobile phone is carried at Sandoz in Kundl, Austria

Kundl is a site in the Inn valley that produces antibiotics from fermentation through to finished oral dosage forms. Novartis, before the spin-off of Sandoz, described investment of more than 100 million euros as part of a 150 million euro commitment to the site, including 50 million euros of public funding, with a modern enzymatic process planned for oral amoxicillin and construction to be completed by 2025. The same announcement said that a sterile active ingredient plant would be built in Palafolls in Spain, leaving Kundl to concentrate on oral antibiotics. For a handset, the picture is a mix of large fermenters, downstream recovery with organic solvents, and powder processing, all under strict contamination control. That is a different problem from a refinery.

Operators and contractors

Sandoz
Antibiotic manufacturing at Kundl, operated as an independent company since the spin-off from Novartis.
Construction and engineering contractors
Teams delivering the plant modernisation announced for Kundl.
Specialist maintenance and validation firms
Contractors who work within qualification and change control procedures.

Classified units and areas

Fermentation
Large vessels and utilities; off-gas and cleaning solvents handled with local classification.
Solvent extraction and recovery
Flammable organic solvents used in recovery and purification, in gas groups the plant defines.
Solvent storage and distillation
Tanks, pumps and recovery columns with Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas.
Drying, milling and granulation
Dust areas for active ingredient and excipient powders, Zone 21 and Zone 22.
Clean areas and packaging
Not classified for gas, but strictly controlled for entry of equipment.
Warehouses and utilities
Boilers, compressed air and water treatment outside the process areas.

What a pharmaceutical site does to a handset

GMP adds a second set of rules on top of the Ex marking, and the quality unit has as much say as the safety officer.

Two approvals, not one

A device in a classified process area needs an Ex certificate and also has to satisfy contamination control rules. Sandoz's quality teams decide what may enter, and the certificate does not answer their questions about materials and cleaning.

Cleaning and wipe-down

A handset that enters controlled areas has to be wiped down. IP68 describes ingress protection, not chemical resistance, so the housing material and disinfectant compatibility are datasheet questions and no claim is made here.

Photographs under policy

Photography inside a pharmaceutical plant is restricted. Android Enterprise policy can disable or restrict the camera by area, and the 50 MP camera is for use where the site allows it.

Records that must be attributable

Pharmaceutical records need to show who did what and when. A managed handset with user enrolment can support that, though validation of any software remains the plant's job.

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work at Kundl.

Solvents01

Solvent area rounds

Operators check pumps, transfer hoses and recovery columns in the solvent areas. A handset that can be used in the classified zone replaces a trip back to a safe-area terminal for each reading.

Powder02

Dust area inspections

Drying and milling areas require checks on dust collection and housekeeping. Recording an inspection with a time and a position gives the quality and safety teams a trace.

Projects03

Plant modernisation work

Construction teams working beside running production need permits and area controls. An enrolled device keeps permits and daily reports in one place, restricted to approved applications.

What Sandoz's teams would ask of a handset supplier

We have not found a public handset supplier route at Sandoz, so none is claimed. A regulated pharmaceutical manufacturer will in general expect supplier qualification and change control to apply to anything that enters a production area, and that applies to a phone as much as to a pump. Ask the procurement, engineering and quality teams which supplier qualification and site induction steps apply.

Ex evidence
Certificate, marking, temperature class and gas group for the solvents in use.
Materials and cleaning
Housing and seal materials, and compatibility with the site's disinfectants.
Software control
Which applications are installed, and how updates are approved and recorded.
Camera and radio policy
Central control by area.
Documentation
German manual and declaration of conformity.
Questions · Sandoz Kundl

Frequently asked questions

Is the IS-04Z1 certified for use at Kundl?

No. Certification is in progress for a Q4 2026 launch, and we make no claim to any relationship with Sandoz. Acceptance follows the plant's own engineering and quality review.

Does an Ex certificate satisfy GMP?

No. They address different questions. The Ex certificate covers ignition protection, and GMP covers contamination and data control. A plant needs both answers.

Which solvents are used at Kundl?

We do not state them. The plant's classification documents list the substances and gas groups, and the safety officer checks them against the certificate.
