Hazardous Area Smartphone Distributor in Austria

The IS-04Z1 is an ex proof phone designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for gas and dust atmospheres, built for refinery turnarounds, gas stations on the transit grid, steel works and fibre plants. OMV AG, an integrated oil, gas and petrochemical group, is Austria's largest energy business, with a turnover of about 36 billion euros in 2021, and its refining and chemicals sites are typical Zone 1 and Zone 2 workplaces. A hazardous area smartphone distributor in Austria would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.

More about Austria that matters for portable equipment

Austria: logistics and access

Transport used 31.3% of energy in 2021, the largest share of any sector, and the last coal plant closed in 2020, so fuel logistics and gas networks are the main thermal energy infrastructure.

Austria: industry on the ground

Imported oil supplied 35.4% of energy consumed in 2022 and gas 16.8%, so pipelines, storage and distribution terminals form a large share of Austria's flammable-materials infrastructure.

Austria: rules and approvals

Directive 2014/34/EU became mandatory for manufacturers on 20 April 2016, and Directive 1999/92/EC requires employers to divide workplaces into zones by the likelihood and persistence of an explosive atmosphere.

Austria: infrastructure

More than 3,000 hydro plants provided 54% of installed generating capacity in 2021, and Verbund generates about 90% of its power from hydro, so dam and turbine-hall work dominates the electricity side.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Austria. Austria is landlocked and its hazardous areas are processing rather than production: the refinery and tank farm at Schwechat, gas at Baumgarten, steel at Linz and Donawitz, fibre at Lenzing and fermentation at Kundl. A day can move from Zone 1 to Zone 21 within one company. Under the VEXAT the employer classifies the areas, not SAMS.

Questions · Austria

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area smartphone in Austria today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does a hazardous area smartphone in Austria cost?

SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which sites in Austria does this cover?

The market guide for Austria covers Schwechat, Baumgarten an der March, Linz, Donawitz and Leoben, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Austria?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Austria.

Does Austria use ATEX for handheld devices in hazardous areas?

Yes, as an EU member Austria applies ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU to equipment, and workplaces are zoned under Directive 1999/92/EC. Devices for Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas normally need the Ex marking, CE marking and documentation. Check the operator's list of accepted categories.

Is OMV the main hazardous-area operator in Austria?

OMV AG is the largest energy business, with integrated oil, gas and petrochemical activity, so it is a major source of classified areas. Other sites include chemical plants and utility sites. Supplier approval is run by each company, so contact its procurement and safety teams.

Does an Austrian approval follow the ATEX certificate?

No: ATEX 2014/34/EU, transposed by the Explosionsschutzverordnung 2015, is the whole product-side requirement and there is no separate Austrian product approval. The employer's duties sit under the VEXAT, which is where evaluation time goes. SAMS holds no ATEX certificate yet. Confirm what your site's explosion protection document needs.
